In the dog house...again!

About 30 years ago I mowed a plum seedling my mother had transplanted from under great-grandpa's very good plum tree. This was just before that house was sold and the plum tree was pulled out. My mother still loves me, but she hasn't had a good plum in 30 years!

So where are all the female members with some sage advice? I can't help here as I don't have a wife and don't plant trees in the yard.

(with strained voice)...sanity...and...self-esteem...beginning to.......fail........must...reach...man...cave......

Good luck, bro.

smitty,
i think you didn't start the training properly at the very beginning of the marraige. this should be a non-issue. it was stated previously, things happen, life goes on. let her abuse of you continue and it will be worse the next time something happens. if she holds that much hostility over a little tree, what will happen if something serious comes along. mentioned earlier, new vehicle , new guns, girlfriend, you get the idea. good luck with the problem.

agree with above said, I bought a truck without wifes consent, sure it only cost 200 but in my house 200 is a lot of cash, she was furious for all of 5 min, and then calmed down because she knew it really wasn't something to be so angry at, now she is looking forward to me hurting myself at get it running so we can take a ride

Just remember woman have very long memories.
You will hear about this the rest of your life.Any time you have a disagreement it will always be brought up.

Well if that tree was 3 years old and you didn't see it, that means that it was not very healthy or you have bad soil. So it didn't have much of a future.

I would wait till this fall and buy a nice replacement or maybe two if you have the space.

Arkansas Black

and a Golden Delicious, both dwarf trees.

That will be the best $50 you ever spent plus think of all those apple pies.

Too late for you. And you deserve it!!

The correct response would have been at the moment she first came storming in ....."That %$#@ groundhog is back !?! I'll get him *this* time!" and then go storming outside with the necessary tool of your choice (instead of what may be your late, soon to be departed, tool of her choice) to dispatch said heinous creature that would cause her such distress.

Nevermind that said ephemeral groundhog would likely be witty enough to evade your efforts; you made a valiant try to redress this grievance against her. Defending her poor tree against the ravages of wild beasts would have curried unknown rewards and favors for you. Women love cavemen!

Oh well, too late for you, but a lesson learned for those more suited to survive. Darwinism at work, indeed. :)

Oh man, if you cut down one of my apple trees you'd be in more trouble than just the "silent treatment".

Seriously though, as has already been suggested, just go out and buy her a nice apple tree, transplant it properly and she'll get over it. (It's not too late to do that this season. But it is getting a little "late" to find one available at the nursery.)

ETA: Btw, seedling apples are very "iffy" and oftentimes do not turn out to be good apple producers, etc. (I know this because I've been growing fruit trees for about eight guzillion years now.)

(That's part of the problem with seedling trees. You never really know what pollinated that seed used for the seedling tree. Unless you had a controlled pollination procedure, it is a crap shoot at best. Most of the time, in fact, the vast majority of the time, the results are not nearly as good as planting a nursery grown and bred fruit tree IMHO. Seedling trees usually take much longer to come into bearing and grow quite large. Too large for a backyard gardener to really maintain IMHO. Buy a semi-dwarf or dwarf apple tree from the nursery for backyard purposes.)

PLUS, you have to have two different varieties for pollination purposes. So you HAVE TO have an another apple or crab apple tree fairly nearby for the tree to bear fruit.

I like the groundhog blaming idea. Especially if it would require a new Smith & Wesson as just the right tool for eradication.

Don't know if apple trees are like pecan trees. We planted a couple of small pecans last year and I promptly forgot and mowed one. It wasn't any taller than the weed stalks and I overlooked it.

I poured the water to it for a few weeks and it came back. Is fine this year and is tall enough to not be mistaken for a weed.

I agree that if the tree was still a twig after three years that it likely needed to be put out of its misery.

Go for the new Smith & Wesson! It'll make you feel better.

Just a tidbit of info. Pecan trees are much more "agreeable" to seedling planting than apple trees are. You'll probably be ok with pecan seedlings, except for the possible large size. Time will tell.

Apple trees are alot different when it comes to seedling plantings. They are much more unsatisfactory and unpredictable than pecan seedling plantings IMHO. (IIRC, this is mainly due to the lack of other numerous varieties that can pollinate the pecan, so the seedling is more predictable and consistent.)

You may not have killed it. We had a redbud tree that my son "mowed" over three times. We put a wire mesh little fence around it and it grew up from the stump. Made the most attractive tree in our yard. Keep your fingers crossed, all may not be lost!

I'm thinkin', Hell Man put on some long pants with pockets...Tell her it'll grow back stronger and better than ever,
you know the ol' saw, 'what doesn't kill us makes us stronger' deal.

And another thing...oh, gotta go now, heard my wife pull in the driveway,

Later.

"Unbenounced to me I had mowed down her little apple tree that she raised from just a seed 3 years ago. "

So, this is one of those instances where the whole is far more valuable than the sum of its parts??..........:D

You need to explain the entire situation to her. Once she knows that you were looking over the fence at the neighbor that was sunbathing topless she will understand how you ran over the apple tree and forgive you.:D

Apple tree?

Smitty; Funny you should post this today. My neighbor wanted to cut down his Apple tree over hanging my shop, borrowed my rope to pull it away from fence & shop.* Offered my chain saw but he had one. Tree was about 20 - 25 ft. high & rained apples on the shop roof. It's down now & rope is back in my shop. But you can be assured the tree subject will come up again when she gets pissed at you in the future. like maybe 20 years from now.

This was TOTALLY HER fault, and you should immediatly, get off the couch, march into YOUR bedroom and tell her so!!!
If she'd really wanted that stupid tree that she claims to have raised, she should have placed some kind of site markers, or tape, or trimmed around it before you mowed the lawn!!!
Matter of fact, tell her you AINT mowin the lawn again this year,so she AINT GOTTA WORRY BOUT HER PRECIOUS TREES!!!

and I'll stand waaaay over here!!!
