I learned in my grandpa's '70 chevy c10. 402 and 3 on the tree.... made everything else seem easy to drive after. First vehicle of my own was an '83 chevy c30 dually. 454 and 4 on the floor.
My parents 1950 Studebaker 2 door. It had what I called a hill holder. I think the official name was a clutch brake. I thought it was a pretty good feature.
Parents bought a 1957 pontiac that year. If my 51 Ford was down or I was able to use the Pontiac, I did. I did get 120MPH out of it a time or 2 on Highway 40. I knew where the CHP would hide.
That was one great car.
I use to sneak Dad's car out for a drive once in a while without him knowing - until one day. It was a 1967 Chevy ll Nova with three on the column. I was 13 at the time and he use to show me how to work the clutch and gear lever when we went on hunting trips, so one day I decided to try it by myself. I had taken a bunch of drives but one day I got busted - I can still remember his face when I pulled back into the driveway!!! He was not happy and I got punished for months.
'65 dodge Polara w/ the 383.
Dad had quite a few 11 - 12 year olds take their first drive once they were in the neighborhood by pulling over then saying "Take it home".
The first car of my very own was a 1982 Plymouth Horizon TC3 with a 4spd manual. Not really fast, but a fun little car! The ones my dad let me behind the wheel in - on his lap typically were a 1975 Jeep CJ5 with a 4-speed and a 1967 VW Bug which was also a 4 spd topped with a white ceramic shift knob. In these I learned the art of shifting. Come to think of it, since I was about 16, I think I've always had at least something in the stable with a manual tranny.
My dads 66 Oldsmobile delta 88. That was back when cars were cars. Big as an ocean liner, lightning fast, with living room comfort for 6 high school buddies. Armor plate bumpers for protection front and rear. 36 cent gas went nicely with the 10 mpg it got. Dad taught me to park it, no small feat, to be sure.
I taught myself to "park" in it though...
Boy, if that car could talk.
Those were the days.
In drivers ed it was some nondescript early 70s Pontiac. At home it was my Dads 1970 Ford Country Squire 9 passenger As to with a 390. A real boat. Passed my test in it too, second attempt.
1970 Ford Custom.....the stripped to nothing version of the Galaxie...mom bought it new and in 1974, the back bumper fell off while driving down the street because the frame rusted thru.
I took my state test in my parent's 66 Chevy BelAir wagon. My first car was a 61 Chevy Nomad wagon with 98,000 miles on it. Lots of rust but it got me to school and work.
Legally, when I was 16- A 1985 Buick Skyhawk, in all it's glory.
I did walk to meet my wayward sister a few times and drove her Chevette home before I was of age.
Learned to drive a stick in a Beetle.
First vehicle I drove was my dads Ford PU up and down the dirt county road. I was 12, he just said take it, he didn't even go with me. Other than that it was High School drivers ed in a huge Plymouth. Instructor had us do donuts out in a field. My first car was a Pontiac Ventura 6cyl with three on the tree. I had never driven a stick. My step dad drove me across town to pick it up. He threw me the keys and said hope you learn see you later. I did make it but the smell of burning clutch was strong.
