Info Chart for S&W 1st and 2nd Model Americans

Well men, every since I sent payment off for my Model 3 Second Model American chambered in 44 Russian, I've been nursing a growing curiosity about these guns. It's got to the point where I can't wait till Christmas to get my first book on them, so I'm ordering Chicoine's book right away. Anyway, I thought I'd start an information chart on these. I won't have a factory letter for at least three months, but I'll post what I have and y'all can cut and paste, inputting your data as you see fit. Always cut and paste the entire chart so that everything stays together.

I'd suggest, if it's ok w/ Para, you might want to post these tables in the FAQ folder of this forum -- seems like a good place for 'em. I think they're interesting & worth doing, and the NM3 d.b. that was started somewhere will slip out of memory I think if it's not in the FAQ's.

I'd suggest even more strongly that you consider joining the SWCA. The SWCA Forum has databases on various models that different members have been contributing to. (Copyrighted to SWCA, for member use only).

I've just spent the past 4 days compiling about 1,000 observed tip-ups & top-breaks (including I think about 300+ Model 3s of various stripes) to be uploaded to that database.

The morals:

1. Get the books.

2. Join the club.

Kirk, I stongly second what Jim says above. This is not the catagory for a data base. Maybe in the FAQs. Most serious collectors of S&W Americans & big frame top breaks belong to the S&W Collectors Assoc. and their data bases is where you find info. posted and available. There are a number of Canadian members with fine S&W collections, some of many years standing. I know you are serious from the intelligent questions you have asked here about these guns, so if you haven't already applied, I will be glad to sponser you for membership. email me at [email protected] with your postal address and I will send you a membership application to the Smith & Wesson Collectors Assoc. Also, I would suggest you get a copy of "Smith & Wesson American Model" by S&WCA member, Lt. Col. Charlie Pate. It's the end all Bible for American Models. Thank you, Jim and Ed, for your advice. I am actually in the process of acquiring the three books that Ed mentioned a while back. That should keep me busy learning for a bit.
