I am working on a 52-1, that I am getting firing pin tears on the primers. This undoubtably comes from the barrel dropping down to unlock before the firing pin has retracted fully. This first was noticed with the original factory 8lb recoil spring. I purchased a Wolff S&W 52 calibration pack. I replaced the original firing pin rebound spring, with the included extra power rebound spring. Still does it. I tried the extra power 9 and 10lb recoil springs, and it still does it, although less. Not much difference in tearing between 9 and 10lb recoil springs. I am using 2.7 gr of Bullseye with a 148 gr cast WC @ 762 fps. Is this an issue that is an accepted tendency with the 52, that you just have to live with?

This gun is nearly 50 years old and is still tight. Ransom rest tests at 25 yds with the factory springs, run 1.25 to 1.5" for 10 shots. Groups tend to be oblong vertically. If I could eliminate the two or three outside shots out of the ten, I would have sub 1 inch groups. I had been advised that a weak recoil spring can cause vertical stringing, so I am anxious to try again with the 10 lb recoil spring.

What brand of primers are you using? If you use the load in another .38 do they also tear? If so, contact the primer mfgr. If not, remove the firing pin and examine the tip and first 1/4" of the sides. Lightly stone off any burs. Check also the fp hole for rough edges. Recheck ransom rest results with factory loads. In my experience jumping in and swapping parts/springs only adds to the number of variables. The M-52 is a precision gun and if cleaned regularly rarely gives unsolvable problems. Been shooting my 52-2 for about 35 yrs.without any. Good luck.

I am using Federal SP primers, but there is nothing wrong with the primers. Probably a better description of the primer condition would be a teardrop smear, rather than a tear, as there is no penetration through the primer cup. I examined the firing pin and tunnel when I replaced the rebound spring and saw no burrs or debris in the tunnel, but I will examine again.

If the recoil spring fixes the vertical string, why worry about primer "smear"? If it isn't affecting the accuracy, don't be concerned about it.

My 52-1 does not have a smear but more like you added a dot right at the edge of the firing pin indention.
Has always been there.
Installed a Wolff extra power firing pin return spring which may have helped a bit but still there.
Have always run the 8# recoil spring with my loads of 2.8gr BE.
I am not concerned, it seems to be he nature of the beast and no problems after a few thousand rounds.
If it is a teardrop as deep as the firing pin indention then I would be concerned with firing pin wear or breakage.
If not I would just carry on.
Get a spare firing pin if concerned, they are still out there new old stock.
Maybe change to Winchester primers as that is what I use, the Federals could have a softer cup causing more of a teardrop effect.
