These grips came on a 1950 Target from an estate. Inside is marked Shaw's Checkering Service, Garden Grove, Ca. Anyone heard of these?

Very nice, but not factory. I personally have never heard of Shaw's, but look here: Gunstock Checkering: Shaw's Checkering Service: Amazon.com: Books@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41IpubteaGL.@@AMEPARAM@@41IpubteaGL Apparently they wrote a book in 1961. There is also an ad in the December 1959 issue of Guns magazine offering checkering services, patterns, etc. Address given was 9311 Cellini Ave, Garden Grove. My guess is that these may have been someone's custom stocks, but checkered by Shaw's.

I knew they weren't factory but the high quality of the checkering made me ask on the Forum. Apparently, Shaw's was at least somewhat known in the gun world. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't make the grips and not just checker someone else's grips. Probably never know.

I'd assume that their principal business was checkering other people's stocks. Had they manufactured significant numbers of their own stocks, the Shaw name would likely have been better known.

Very nice, I find myself buying old guns just for the wonderful stocks that are on some of them.Very cool!

I bought these grips on fleabay yesterday ... I like the extra length of the grips, and the closed section at the top of the back strap. I'll be stripping the varnish, and applying an oil finish.
