Greetings from southcentral PA and my condolences to you on the passing of your dad.
For what it's worth, let me share this story. While my dad was still alive, on one visit he said to me, "You're doing this cowboy shooting. Take the Trapdoor Springfield home." Pop giving me that old 45-70 rifle from the 1880s gave me the impetus to get my first bona fide safe. It occurred to me that if I lost that gun because of a fire, yes, with money I could buy another Trapdoor Springfield, but it wouldn't be the one that my dad gave me.
So my recommendation is to give your dad's gun a good cleaning and oiling, get a box of shells, take it out and shoot it and think about your dad. Preserve it for the next generation.

Yes. Selling a family gun to fund the purchase of one with no sentimental value is stupid to me. But it’s his gun and his to do whatever he wants with it.

Sorry. Didn’t see the signature line. I have far too many guns. One of them is my old off duty Model 640 in .38 Special. I’ve talked to my kids about inheriting my guns and which ones I would be comfortable with them selling, which is most of them. Some of them I tell them not to sell, simply because they just keep climbing in value so selling them will always be a dumb mistake since they cost nothing to keep. But both my kids know they will never sell that 640. My son doesn’t even like shooting it. But he says “why would I sell something that you carried to defend your life? Without that gun, I might not even be here”. Never fired it at somebody but surely sent them running when I pulled it either in plain clothes or off duty.
