The WEIG-A-TINNY seems to be the rail that is used to install an Aimpoint on the 686. This requires the removal of the front sight

I'd prefer to have the rail installed so as to retain the open sights (is that the correct nomenclature for the stock sights?)
example attached.

This will require the red dot be placed further forward on the gun, and thus induce a rotational moment greater than if it were a few millimeters back. This does not seem significant to me.

this position increases the distance from the eye to the optics front. Is this a problem? I am overthinking this, aren't I? I asked this because when Smith and Wesson drills and taps they have the holes above the cylinder, in the further back position. What is the reason for this placement?

Also, the mid-position, the position that allows the rear open sight to remain attached, requires a different front sight. What sight is this? It is shown in the attached photo.

Weight , the rail being over the cylinder keeps ballance better than over the barrell !! But it's your gun & choice . my 2 %

So, it seems my 686 will be the gun with the red-dot and the red dot will stay on. I'll get another .357 for use with open sights. T

With the dot over the cylinder, the gun is balanced better. Also, the dot is closer to the hinge point (wrists) when the gun recoils, therefore it moves up and down less as you are firing. Quicker to find the dot again after each shot, and I think, quicker to find on the draw, as well.

I like having the red dots as far back as possible. ......

I will have it further back, makes more sense.

Ilike the rail.
