I put the Apex hard sear and USB in a M&P 45 compact and can't believe the difference it made in the smoothness and how much it dropped the trigger pull. Actually made the pistol shootable! Trigger pull was gritty and off the scale before, but now it's smooth and the pull was measured at 4 and 1/2 lbs. Sure made a believer out of me and I'd highly recommend these two upgrades if yours is like mine was. Two thumbs up to APEX!
I've got no connection with APEX- other than being a happy customer!!

Couple questions.
How much?
How hard is it to do for a brand new pistol guy?
How much would it help in an M&P full size 9mm for a new pistol guy?

Well, if you mean how much for the parts, they were $41.95 for the sear and $35.95 for the USB.
If you mean how much difference it made, I'd say it's like night and day. Hard to describe, but it was incredible-in my pistol-ymmv.
For a guy that's new to pistols, go to Apextactical.com to look at the parts and you can also view how-to videos to decide if you want to try installing them. You might find that it's a good idea to contact a good gunsmith about the job. Getting the Loctited rear sight set screw out can be particularly aggravating. You also should have the proper punch or drift to drive the rear sight out without damaging it.
Hard to say how much difference it would make for a new shooter. I'd say to get your trigger pull weight measured and go from there. If it's gritty and heavy- [8 to 10 lbs.] like mine was, I'll bet you'd really like the results, and it would make you a better pistol shot.
I hope all this helped, Bill.

I'm tempted, but see a lot saying you gun...shouldn't do it on your carry

On my carry gun I installed the DCAEK kit (duty/carry kit). It smoothed out the trigger. I left in the factory trigger spring and my trigger pull was 4-4.5 lbs. Not to light for CC in my opinion.

If you have a lousy trigger, there is no problem with improving it with quality aftermarket parts. If you have a trigger that is already acceptable to you, you will leave it stock. Never improving a substandard trigger for supposed legal liability reasons is Ayoob-based internet-repeated hokum.

If you make it unsafe (too light), and you have a negligent discharge you could have a problem.

Improving a trigger so it helps the gun shoot more accurately and faster is defensible in court, IF such ever occurs (statistically insignificant).

Either you used your gun in a legally defensible way, or you didn't. The trigger is the least of your worries if you screwed up the shoot in the first place.

3.5 to 4 lb is lowest trigger for carry. A group of Ruger 1911 owners at our club's indoor range had theirs set to 2 lbs. When I tried it, knowing the rework, I still had apremature discharge downrange! Way too light.
I'm still evaluating M&P-9 Pro CORE before trying Apex.

I'm mainly considering it because the pull is way too much IMO. Have a glock 27 and a Ruger 1911 and granted...different pistols but it just seems like I have to apply twice the amount of force to the trigger on the shield as with most other handguns i've fired.

My Shield measured almost 9 lbs trigger pull from the factory. Polishing brought it to 7.5. Apex brought it to 5.5 and made it smooth--what it should be from the factory, but isn't for at least some of us.
