My son seems destined for the military and has talked with various military people (current and retired) about his path. In addition he has been doing his research and such on the matter. At first I wasn't sure if he was serious but given his actions in the last 4 months he seems pretty focused. I think this would be a good choice for him and would be very proud.
However, there is a situation that has come up. He turned 19 the other day and is going to be dropped from our insurance. Cobra kicks in and the cost is $500 per month for a healthy 19 year old and he stays under existing coverage/plan. If I'm reading the paperwork correctly, apparently Cobra these days can go up to 36 months.
He doesn't have insurance coverage through his job, and jobs with benefits are a bit hard to find around here.
I'm wondering if it is reasonable for him to shop for private insurance that may cost less than $500? How would one go about this? Where to start?
Thanks
