I like Shane McGovern and the Baltic Celts but I don't think they count as traditional folk music

I favor The Pogues and Black 47. They don't count as traditional folk music either.

I grew up listening to the Irish Rovers.
The Unicorn is a classic.
And Tied up with a black velvet band. I was about 12 when Dad played it, gave me impure thoughts.

Thistle and Shamrock

'Thistle and Shamrock' was one of my favorite radio shows.

Something funny. I taped Fiona Ritchie's shows so I could listen during the week. One Sunday morning we were driving to church with 'Thistle and Shamrock' playing and Fiona Ritchie in her car with the 'Fiona1" license plate pulled right up beside us. I was trying to get my wife to roll the window down but she turned right and got away. I thought that was an amazing coincidence.

I'm Irish-American (born in Ireland but came to the USA as a wee child) the closest thing to enjoying Irish music for me is Dropkick Murphy.

I do listen to the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem pub songs on special occasions.

I saw the Dubliners at a theatre in Dublin. They were great. The audience ( and I assume the band ) had a whiskey break at intermission. Also great.

Celtic Music

My wife and I attend an annual Celtic Music Festival almost every year. Two of our favorites are Vishten, a French Canadian/Acadian band with great harmony and Molly's Revenge, a hard-driving Irish rock band using traditional instruments. Both are not exactly The Chieftains, but great music..

Check out The Cherry Cokes, a Japanese group of all things. Rousing Irish bar ballads sung in Japanese.

Peter Cook once famously said "the only thing wrong with the Aaarish is Aaarish music."

There is bad music in all genres; interminable saxophone in jazz, endless piano in classical music and almost all rap and hip-hop. Sometimes Celtic music suffers from tin-whistle, fiddle and squeeze box cuteness. On the other hand, each has compositions that will make you weep and laugh.
