Acording to the S&W standard catalog the switch to MIM hammer and trigger occured on the 586-6 guns. The 686 it's stainless sister changed to MIM with the 686-5.
Do you remember if the firing pin is mounted on the hammer where you can see it or is it frame mounted?Frame mounted =MIM

Did not know that, I thought that all of the revisions to the 586/686 lines happened at the same time. I knew that the 686 went to MIM at -5 so I just assumed that the 586 did as well.

C'mon guys, it's in the book. The -5 came out in 1998 and eliminated the cylinder stop stud and changed to MIM parts and frame mounted firing pin.

So I guess I was right, I am going to have to break down and buy the book so I can know all this stuff!

I checked on the 586-5 today and it is indeed MIM parts.Thats actually a good thing. Now I can easily replace the bobbed hammer.I am having it turned into 3" and will post pictures when it is done.
