is a 908 the same as a 3914?

Since its 3913 week here, I have looked at them and they all look like mine except mine reads "model 908" under the slide release.

Not quite the same, no. The 908 is kind of a "cheaper" version of the 3914. It uses some plastic parts where the 3914 uses metal (guide rod, mag. release, sights) and has less machining to the slide and frame, making it a little more "blocky". The barrel lock-up is a little different as well, with the 908 locking into the slide by the barrel hood while the 39 series uses barrel "lugs" like a 1911.

None of this detracts from the effectiveness of the 908. The 908 is a great pistol - just as good if not better than the 39 series.

I've owned both and shot and carried the 908 for two years and then a 3914 for more than a year and still do. They carry about the same (very flat and plenty light) but they don't shoot the same.

The 908 is both cosmetically and mechanically slightly different with less machine work done on it and more plastic parts. But the big difference to me is the accuracy.

Up to about 12 feet the accuracy is comparable which for CC self defense purposes is good enough. But beyond 15 feet the 908 was a lot less accurate for me and it wasn't my trigger control or any other human error because I shot them side by side during two shooting sessions with the same ammo. I have no idea mechanically why they would have differences in accuracy but they did.

In light of those differences, if I was not able to find or afford a 3914 in good condition like I did a year ago, I would still own, shoot and carry the 908. Both are outstanding CC weapons.
