Is it just my advanced age? Probably.

'zagged, my outlook is pretty much like yours. I don't carry -- or haven't yet -- because I am almost never out of the house. But in the house I am never more than 10 feet from a loaded gun.

I have considered applying for a CCW because I hope to do some traveling around the country in the next couple of years and it would make sense to get a multi-state permit that would let me do so legally. I imagine there are states I would avoid in my travels, or at least make sure I have a compliant safe in the vehicle to get through them on a "safe passage" basis.

In the past I have said pretty much the same here as the original poster said but maybe a little rougher or cruder. I was sort of put down as "the type" probley felt I was putting them down for needing to have a gun handy while they were showering etc.
For over 35 years I was required to pack on my lowly job. So all those years I really didnt give much thought about other mainstream people wanting to pack etc. Then I retired 13 years ago and along with that I aged, got bad knees etc. Where years back I really feared no one or even gave it a secound thought reality has slowly set in and I know I aint the tough guy that I used to think I was. Where and when I was raised I didnt know anybody that packed but of course almost everyone had guns in the house. That was a different age and the world has changed. This still isnt downtown bagdad or bengazi. Maybe if I lived in detroit I would be a little more religious about packing but as it is I seldom pack near our house. When I travel I pack. My hobby is trail rideing a lot on a quad. I and most others pack in the boonies. I dont see the need to ever carry a 2nd gun or even extra ammo. But thats just me. Others will do what they want. I think many go overboard with packing while mowing their back yard etc but thats their business and not mine although I probley think to myself they are either newbys or paranoid as hell.

I work on a couple of large Indian reservations here in NM. The violent crime rate on the rez is about three and a half times the national average, and I'm often miles and miles of bad road from any help.

I carry my P220 and two spare mags. I have some more mags in my rig.

Before that I worked in pre-Katrina New Orleans, on a fugitive task force. I carried the same thing.

This has worked for me for 22 years so far.

I remember a post on another forum from a young guy (non-LEO) who claimed to carry an FN 5.7 with two spare 20 round mags and an SP101 .357 Magnum in his pocket as a backup. If I felt the need to carry all that, I'd move.

I had several reasons for obtaining my CCW license soon after it became legal in Kentucky. First and foremost, I believe it's my right to carry. But at the time there were still people I had been instrumental in sending to prison or lengthy jail terms who were now on the street and not happy with me. There were also some situations in which I was followed and/or threatened on the highway for no reason I could see. Got the license and have carried daily since. But I don't think I've ever been paranoid in going about my daily life; and thanks be to the Great Spirit, I've never been forced to draw my gun. I devoutly hope it stays that way.

Having a gun handy saved my bacon once. It was a long time ago, but that was enough. I find it extremely difficult to venture into a state that does not honor my CCW - feeling virtually naked with no real means of defense on the mean streets does nothing for my peace of mind or my obligation to protect my better half if need be.

Carry what you like, how many you like - it's WAY better to have the means and not need it than to need it and not have it. The first rule of gun fighting applies - have a gun.

Hey I always carry when mowing the yard but its because if I don't there are snakes everywhere. Just packing runs them off:-)

When I carry I usually have my LCP with 7 rounds and I am ok with just that as my means of last resort.

I refuse to live my life in fear of everyone i come across being a person out to do me harm. Lifes too short to be paranoid all the time. I don't have all the answers and maybe some nut might come up and shoot me today as i'm mowing my yard but i wont have 2 or 3 guns on my person at all times...

Much like Chuck. I will change in an instant when/if it seems warranted by a change in my situation, but for me a Chief or a small automatic is about as much as I am willing to lug around these days.

I don't carry oxygen and a defibrillator for someone to use on me if I keel over. It would probably be a better use of my time and energy than carrying 2-3 guns. :)

Packin' Iron

I never owned or was interested in handguns in my youth. A good lever gun to hunt deer or shotgun for birds was all I wanted. Life has a way of kicking you in the posterior to get your attention. Twenty-six years ago I was home on leave from Europe and met a friend to do a little duck hunting. We traveled to the shooting fields, about 250 miles away and planned to spend the night at a local motel. At about 2100 hours I got thirsty for a coke and went down a dark hallway to the coke machine, where I heard a voice in the dark yell, "back away from the machine". The overhead light blinded me to the pitch black. The sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round got my attention. "throw down your wallet!" came out of the dark. I did as ordered. "pick it up and throw it over here!" That's when I saw him, the shotgun pointed at me. "Turn around", he yelled. I thought 'this is it!' I prayed and waited for the blast! I heard footsteps leaving, I ran in the opposite direction. The perp was an escaped convict with 2 notches on that shotgun. I spent the rest of the night with two detectives looking thru mug-files. Everybody said I was LUCKY! He got $250 and I got my life. Needless to say, I ain't forgot. I am an expert pistol shot and shoot weekly. I carry and shoot a .38 snubbie. I can still take out a target at 100 meters with a .38 Special/9mm at age 72. I live with two large German shepherds that are with me 24/7. They will give their lives for me, this I have no doubt. They will buy me time to go to DEFCOM IV. A friend once told me, paranoia is only a heightened sense of awareness. I now pay attention.

Thank Got nothing happened to you, Yes be very aware of your surroundings.. it is not the 50's anymore. Trust NO ONE!!!
Gosh, I sure miss them old days!

Aloha,

Most of you live in states where CCW is issued.

Here in Hawaii, NONE are issued at all.

A major conspircy by LEO and majority of local government.

A lot of recent deaths have been committed by knives. Altho there

have been shooting, the criminal is Usually caught. But, not always.

I and a lot of my friends carry pocket folders. No guns.

Our property has a 6 foot hollow tile wall all around and a powered gate.

We also have 3 Australian Cattle Dogs. We cosider them our alarms and

first line of defense.

Doesn't mean that several M-10s or 13s qren't handy.

Keith44SPL: Very nice short rifle, top grade, thanks for showing it. I always appreciate a .45 Colt show.

Years ago when a night fisherman was stabbed near Boston with me being a night fisherman I had the fear of copycats. When night fishing I had my 1911 with 7 mags in my rear pocket along with a 50rd box of 45cap ammo in my glove box. When things settled down I didn't carry that much ammo. I soon carried a loaded 44mag with two speed loaders. I do carry a small knife for mainly cutting apples/fruit. Bb

Btw I do have a leg holster for a small backup auto pistol but I haven't tried I yet. I carry a s&w m58 in 41mag or my cz 82 in 9mm Mak. One gun only.
