Is it possible to fit a steel magazine release on a S&W 910?

I've already replaced my guide rod and disconnector, this is the last plastic part that I have to replace.

I used replacement parts from a 5904, but it looks like the 5904 magazine release has a plunger that keeps the nut from backing off(the 5904 looks like a screw on unit, whereas the 910 simply pops into place). Is it possible to use the 5904 release and nut without the plunger?

If not, anyone where know where I can get a steel magazine release that fits the 910?

I made this modification to my CS45 but it requires retrofitting the frame to the original features required to run the plunger that capture the nut/button that threads on to the mag catch. This is because the catch in the 910 is a nylon button that 'snaps' on over a barb. It can't unscrew so it doesn't need the detent. Like you I didn't want the plastic part on such a critical control for the gun so I decided to retro the frame to the original catch design. I basically purchased all the parts off a traditional catch gun and then built a jig to allow drilling of the bore for the detent. It wasn't difficult as far as a machining operation goes but it's absolutely not a drop in change.

Check with the factory, but I thought they made one with a steel insert so you would have steel against the steel magazine.

I think they make these available for LE purchasers, but regular folks can order them as well.

It seems I remember helping a friend fit one years ago. The hardest part was figuring out how to remove the old one since it does not screw off like the standard ones on the top of the line autos!

Check the S&W part numbers, if the last digit before the zeros is a 9 it is plastic, 6 stainless or 5 steel IIRC. I replaced two 908 mag catches with ones I ordered from Brownells, they were 5's steel I believe. I don't think S&W still makes the plastic. You will need the mag catch nut which is still plastic, the value line mag catches are not threaded, the nut is a slip on friction fit, to remove you use a punch to push the old catch out. I would also replace the spring while I had it apart.
