Is it too much?

I've been looking for a M617 for a while now. At a gun show last week I found a nice 617-1 6 shot, 6" barrel with combat grips. Pretty close to what I've been after. I'd kinda like a 10 shot, but a 6 isn't a deal breaker either. $850 seemed a bit high though, thoughts?

There's one on GB right now (617-1, 6") with 8 hours left and 6 bids, at $600.

The one on GB for $600 (at the moment) has rubbers, it's missing the combat grips. Combats should be worth the difference.

That price is not too far off the mark. If it was a 4-inch....maybe a different story....as in no-brainer. I sold a 6-inch ND last year for $900, but it had box and papers. The dash-1 has a drilled-n-tapped frame, but the only year for the flash-chromed trigger and hammer was the ND....first year of production.

The 617-1 came standard with a rubber Hogue "Monogrip." The no dash 617 had the finger groove wood stocks. Your gun may have been lucky enough to get the wood or the original may have been replaced. If you look at what early 617's have been going for, the price is realistic. If the gun has the stocks that came on the no dash version, it's a bargain. One other significant difference between the no dash and dash one is the ejector star. The dash one is square with no pins, and the no dash is the pinned "standard" design. No functional difference, but a cost-cutting measure. Also the dash one is drilled and tapped. Good luck.

It did have either the flash chromed trigger & hammer or forged (maybe??), they were different from what my 610-3 has.

Finding a 617 or dash one with combat grips at any price seem to be difficult. If it is in like new condition, and I wanted one, I would get one. I paid $800 for an early 617 in box a couple of years ago. Maybe too much then, but ok now and I've had the use of it since then. You can pass this one up and search for a long time and spend lots of money looking for another one, hoping for a better price. Those guns will last forever!

Never let the price of a tank of gas get between you and a gun you really want. We've all paid too much for one at one-time-or-another. Anybody that would call it foolish....probably don't have one, or bought it 30-years ago for around $300.

edit: If the hammer and trigger are shiny....flash-chromed. It they are dull-blue looking....forged. The dash 1 should be forged, but the factory will over-run until they use-up parts. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to find flash-chromed on some early dash 1's.

You didn't mention if it was a ND or not which makes a big difference in value.

If the factory combats are original to the gun it would be a ND and if in nice condition the price is very realistic for the internet buying market, especially if it has box, papers, etc.

I sold a LNIB 6" 617 ND on GB in July for $1,240 and there were a number of bidders / bids on it.

BARGAIN 617s ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. I SEARCHED FOR A CLEAN USED 4 INCH, 10 SHOT FOR YEARS W/O SUCCESS. I FINALLY ENDED UP BUYING A NEW ONE. IT WAS OVER $800. WHEN ALL WAS SAID AND DONE. I REPLACED THE REAR SIGHT WITH A JACK WEIGAND .140 WIDE BLADE, AND THE PATRIDGE FRONT SIGHT WITH A S&W RED RAMP. THE RUBBER GRIP WAS SWAPPED OUT FOR SOME WOOD FROM AHRENDS. IT HAD TO BE RETURNED TO S&W BECAUSE IT WAS SPITTING LEAD, BUT IT'S A GREAT REVOLVER AT LAST. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A NO DASH, 8 3/8 INCH 617, 6 SHOOTER, COMPLETE WITH BOX, PAPERS AND ORIGINAL COMBATS. IT CAME WITH AN UNMOUNTED 2X SCOPE AND A B-SQUARE MOUNT, THAT WERE NEVER ON THE GUN. THE GUN LOOKED UNSHOT. I PAID DEARLY FOR IT, BUT IT WAS WELL WORTH IT. I SOLD OFF THE SCOPE AND USED THE B-SQUARE TO MOUNT AN ULTRADOT 1MOA, RED DOT. THIS REVOLVER SHOOTS LIKE A RIFLE. IT OBLITERATES THE X-RING @ 50 FT. UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO SHOOT PLATE OR PIN MATCHES, I WOULD NOT INSIST ON A 10 SHOT. THE 6 SHOOTER SEEMS TO STAY MUCH CLEANER AROUND THE EXTRACTOR AREA, AND IS EASIER TO KEEP THAT WAY. I WOULDN'T HESITATE TO PURCHASE THIS 6 INCH REVOLVER , IF IT MEETS YOUR NEEDS. THE PRICE IS NOT OUTRAGEOUS, AND A YEAR FROM NOW IT WILL SEEM LIKE A BARGAIN. BUY IT, AND ENJOY IT. LIFE IS SHORT……….
