So I recently bought a 64-5 38 special and I noticed it has the full hammer but you can't lock it back like you would a single action, however if you pull the hammer halfway it locks in the half cocked position. I was just curious if anyone knows anything about this. Thanks.

The M64-5 was made in both variants. Single / double action as well as double action only. The DA only variant was a special order for a few Police Departments such as NYPD.

I've got one of the NYPD DAO 64s, it came with a bobbed hammer, as far as I recall most of the factory DAOs came with bobbed hammers. Mine will not hang at half-cock. I would highly recommend you take yours to a gunsmith and have them check it out. If it's a DAO they should be able to tell by observing the notches.

I think most of S&W's DAO, if not all, came with bobbed hammers. The locking in a half-cock position sounds really odd to me. I would have a qualified gunsmith check it out or see if S&W would service it.

I have a model 14 Smith that Jim Clark, Jr. modified to double action only. It does not "hang" in the half cock. As stated, get a qualified gunsmith to check it out. Good luck.
