Is now the time to stock up on ammo?

Like most others, I have a stockpile of sorts...but I was thinking...

Is now the time to buy a good stock of .22 rounds? Think about it. The economy is down. We all have seen what happens to other calibers in price, it's gone nowhere but up.

With the economy being down, people still want to shoot and evidenced by the recent innovations and sales of .22 caliber arms, the ammo is sure to react in the near future.

My take.....get it now.....before the rush on it begins...it's coming.

Just use whatever rationalization you need to justify an ammo purchase. I do it.

I have 5500 rds (10bx) of Federal bulk .22lr on hand.

Dang! 5,500 Rds! I feel like I'm short on .22 ammunition with ONLY 7 boxes of Fed 550s and a bunch of CCI stingers (Great .22 hunting round). My old AR-7 loves the stingers.

I guess I'm off to WMart for some more .22 ammunition.

Remember, you can very have enough ammunition...kind of like rope.

Aim small,

I began to think the same way several years ago, and slowly began buying a case here and there whenever I saw a "deal". I just bought a small safe in which to store my "survival" stash, and so I needed to unload my ammo closet and inventory everything. I found I had more than I suspected of almost every caliber. My current stash of .22 LR is over 26,000 rounds, and that's just what's in case lots, does not include the several odd 500-550 rd brick, nor the dozen or so other 50 rd boxes of "shooting" ammo that are laying around here and there.

This is what I do because I don't earn a lot of green. Trying to keep my wallet closed at the moment so I can bring my AK home off layaway but my local shop has a pretty solid deal on some Federal bulk. Never tried the stuff but I don't mind gambling for $17. Wish I had money when my local shop was selling CCI blazer 525 packs for $14! I only bought one haha. Maybe I'll get that deal 'black friday'.

Buy as much ammo as you think you will need before you next move your residence.

one rational excuse is the price will be going up in january like always.

I guess I don't have a specific number in mind to define "enough ammo".
When I run into a particularly good deal on any caliber ammo I'll generally make a purchase, sized on my budget that week. If it doesn't fit in the ammo locker or any of the other stash places around the homestead, then it's time to remove enough of the oldest ammo to make room for the new stuff and then head to the range to properly dispose of the "old stuff" :)

Wait a minute while I check the shore line. Yep, nothing but rocks and trees. That means the ship has left. Without you. The time to buy was in the past.

For instance, the week the current white house resident was elected, Federal Bulk 550s were priced at $13.47 each. My wife induced me to drive her to Wally World the other day. The same exact little cartons are now $18.97. Both prices are before sales tax. It brings the current bill to just over $20 where I live.

So if you don't have enough (you define it anyway you want), yes it is time to purchase some. I guess.

I went out to eat yesterday. The price of my usual meal is up another 15 cents. Not a bunch, but I seem to remember it going up just a few months ago. Don't believe the Government when they publish inflation numbers. They call the game low so they don't have to pay out as much.

Add on the idea that ammo is made from some base metals, but primarily the ones driving the equation are copper and lead. Check it out, both are moving upward, constantly. Once the economy comes out of the doldrums, those materials will be in great demand for other uses. It won't end ammo production, it will just make the ammo companies compete for the resources. When that happens, prices go up even more. And guess what? The ammo makers aren't non-profit organizations. They will just raise their price as raw materials go up. And that means you'll just pay more or do without.

So how's your savings account doing these days? I got my bank statement Saturday. They paid me a whole $.10 interest last month. On a lot of money (to me.) I'm betting inflation ate up more of the value than the measley dime (oh, and I've got to pay income tax on that same dime.) I'm giving out this free economics lesson to point out to you that a case of 10 bulk packs will cost you around $200. Thats only 5500 rounds. Any one want to be that by the time you burn it up wastefully, it'll cost more to replace it?

And if you drive to Wally world 10 times and buy one box each, you'll probably spend more in fuel at $3.50 a gallon than you ever considered. Of course you get to meet interesting people and catch up on the latest fashions in nightwear used by overweight old women. And slippers.

So a good rule to live by. Limit your exposure to Wally World and make one trip. Buy as much ammo as you can afford on that trip. Save your money and your sanity. Ammo gives you a warm feeling on a cold winters night.

It's always good to have ammo in storage.

If you find a good deal - get it and put it in your safe ;)

I know nothing about reloading. You can't reload .22, can you?

I better get my butt to Wally world, I only have 3 550 boxes and a couple 50 rounds.

I know that Clinton had the weather proofing around the primers removed way back. But does rimfire ammo have a shelf life too?

I should stock up also because I only have 94 remington 550 packs in storage and only 6 500 packs of thunderbolts in my weekend user supply. I get 100 dollar gift cards from one of my parts supplier about 4 or 5 times a year. I always ask for dick's, gander mtn or cabella's. I only buy ammo with these cards so It is not costing me much. 19.95 x 5 plus tax is 107.97. With my 100 card everytime I am only at 8 bucks out of pocket for 2750 rounds. I love it. I do buy 9's and 45's also. You have to spred the love a little.

I'm really jealous of you guys. I have one box of CCI Blazer left, probably 200-300 rounds in there. Have a .30 cal can that had 500 rounds of Miwall reloads I bought at a local gunshow and I have 300-400 of that+a random box of CCI blazer aluminum & I have 80 rounds of 6.5x55 Swede(That I can't afford to "stock up" on without reloading). Haven't spent more than $100 on ammo at one time yet hehe(the reloads were $80 for 125 gr. TMC). Will be buying surplus 5.45x39 soon but I don't know if I'll go for a case(2,160 rounds) because $250 takes a chunk out of my checking account.
