Is Something Wrong W/ WInchester Ammo?

Because rimfires going back to the civil war are more prone to misfires because of uneven primer compound in the rim why don't more firearms companies make dual firing pins in their products?
Good question. AFAIK Freedom Arms is the only one. Maybe its way easier to do in a revolver or bolt action rifle than auto that has a bolt (like a Ruger MkII or 10/22) .... shouldnt be but I don't know.

Old ammo is stuff from the 80's or earlier. I have some 333, 555 but it is at least 5 years old.Have not opened it.

I have parts of 2 bricks of PMC, solids for plinking and hollow points for hunting. I have many other brands that have some age on them.

A few years ago I was glass bedding a prewar custom Mauser sporter for a fellow that had a small crack starting and he wanted to continue hunting with it. I had bought a rusty and seriously abused Marlin M-25 at the Topeka gun show, $25.00. I refinished the metal and stock. It was still apart on my bench, knowing I was going to have some Acra Glass left over I prepped the 22 and glass bedded the action.

Put a scope on, bored sighted it and the next time I went to the Busch range at STL I took it. Old Hank was the sight in guy. I had several centerfires to sight in, I asked hank to do the 22. I gave him a box of PMC hollow points, Federal target and one of the high dollar Ely targets and told hank to see what the little puppy can do at 25 yards.

When done with my stuff I went to Hanks booth. There were a few verticle holes and then the center of the target shot out. I said wow, Ely, nope, Federal? Nope, He said he was going to get it close to zero with the old cheap stuff. After he had it hitting dead center he kept on shooting. Old PMC dead center, boy I wish I'd bought more bricks of that in 1986.

Now I've been plinking with the Ely and saving the good stuff.

My Wife has been buying me a box or two every now and the of Winchester SuperX 37 grain copper plated hollow point ammo. It says 1330 fps and it shoots great. The only .22 cal. gun I own is a bolt action rifle. She gives about 10 bucks for a box of 100. I don't plink hardly ever but what I have shot of them they all sounded the same and seemed to have a pretty good pop. Shot as accurate as my CCI mini mags. I have had some CCI stingers that had varied performance out of the same box. Some weak, some not. I like the Winchesters that she buys.
Peace,
gordon

I shot a lot of Win this year both wildcat 40 gr and 333's and didn't have any problem's, I have three 22's one wheel gun and two semi's, I don't know why some people have problem's and others don't, maybe they had some bad lot's.

I guess Winchester has sent their employees to Remington for training :(

Yes, I too have seen the degradation of the Winchester Rimfire ammo and only a few years ago I used to actually prefer it - go figure.........

The two best are now CCI and Federal but be prepared for a good Hunt and bring lots of money!

The Win. 555 boxes when I could find them would give me 5-10 FTF's a box in my 15-22 and always gave me issues with FTE's in my Sig Mosquito. I think they didn't have enough power to properly actuate the slide.
Quick question Cholla, did you see marked benefits from reaming the chambers?

Yes, I would recommend that procedure done on any 22 LR revolver. Accuracy was unchanged. Failure to Fires remained the same (not a chamber problem). Loading using a speedloader improved considerably. AND, ejection even after hundreds of rounds fired still only required a sharp rap on the ejector rod.

A pistolsmith develops a 'feel' for the chambering effort required . I have detected small diameter chambers even on quality Smiths. When I am done I know that all the chambers are identical in diameter and length. ...... Big Cholla

Last year when I purchased my M&P22 pistol, I "lucked out", when the clerk said he had a box of the 333s under the counter. That pistol has shot Thunderbolts, Norma-Tac 22, CCI std vel., Aguila pistol match, and other assorted "coffee can" ammo with no problems. That Winchester 333 bulk has about a 20% fail rate in that pistol though. I after about a 100 rounds, I finally set it aside for singe shot use.

I also set aside the win and now use it only in my revolver. Even there is some times has issues. Some rounds are damaged and do not even chamber.

Our BSA troop goes out 1x a year for .22 rifle shooting. We used gray box Winchester .22 ammo for the last few years and it is the filthiest shooting stuff I have seen.

My Model 60 loves the Win. ammo. We get 100% reliability and it shoots straight. Of course that's the case with several different varieties of Rem. and CCI too. Recently picked up some Norma Tac-22. Haven't tried it yet but am confident it will perk right along just like the rest.

I haven't seen any 22's on the shelf since I can remember so if I shoot it's only old stuff. Mostly CCI, but I got a bunch of Wildcats too. I what I really see here, however is the advantage of shooting with my M17. With the wheel gun you can just keep pulling and run around the cylinder a second time. If there's a stubborn round left, I pull it out and give it a quarter turn. Sooner or later they all go bang.
