Is the Sig ARMY/P320 MHS, Ready to replace the M9?

Is the Sig P320 Army Modular Handgun System edition, ready to replace the Beretta pistols?

I say put the P320 through the same torture tests the Colt 1911 went through back on March 3, 1911.

If it passes, then I'd at least consider it for use.

If it doesn't pass, throw it on the pile with the rest of the wannabes and be done with it.

All these rumors. When did the Government actually say they were
looking for a M9 replacement? I must have missed it.

If I'm not mistaken, I think testing began back in either June or July of this year.

Before it is over with, all of the major players will have an "MHS" contender for the military, and a decade from now, when a choice is made, our military will again be stuck with a years old design. In addition, the military needs a modular handgun like they need a hole in the head. What they need is two basic sizes - and there are plenty of models that have a standard and compact version of a very nice pistol.

It is my understanding, the govt has selected colts new pistol but currently doesn't has the funds to replace the m9s. It is a sham as they worked with FN to develop the FNP and then did not select it

I have a FNX 45, which is refined FNP and think it would be a good replacement but am guessing they don't want another foreign make gun

"...the need for a modular handgun: the military. Tired of needing to buy multiple handguns to suit different roles (carry guns for military police, combat firearms for soldiers, concealable compact guns for investigators) the military has been wanting to replace their existing hodgepodge collection with a single model that can be configured on the fly to meet any mission requirement." -By Nick Leghorn on May 8, 2014

Thing is this is the third or fourth M9 replacement exercise in recent years. I strongly suspect it will end up like all the others, dead in the water after more millions have been flushed.

The Army recently renewed the M-9 contract for five more years. Like it or not, (specialized units being the exception), the Beretta's going to be in service for a while longer.

FN had (has?) a contract to make M4s. I don't see why they couldn't get another contract for the .gov/.mil.

My nephew is a E-8 Green Beret has served 9 tours in Iraq and Afganistan and the side arm he carrys and uses is a Glock 17 9mm. He is still in Afganistan and is a weapons specialist. Said he won't carry any other side arm as its rugged and reliable. I think he likes the Modular design said they don't jam up like the other models do plus he has 17+1 rounds.
I looked at the Sig P320 this past Saturday and I do like the design and the way it can easily interchange barrel lengths on different models of the P320. Could make a much better design than the current M9.

FNH has a large factory in Columbia, SC where they make ARs, M240s, M2492s, etc. Aren't the handguns made there as well?

Anyway...the Army started testing double action 9mm pistols as far back as the 1950s. One was not adopted until 1985. In the intervening years a number of .38 Revolvers and a few Browning Hi Powers saw use alongside the nominal standard 1911A1.

The Army always seems to have been divided about the 1911. As far back as WW2 some had complaints and preferred .38 revolvers and captured German weapons.

The USMC on the other hand considers the 1911 series to be sacred. If you visit the Marine Museum, there is a huge display just for the 1911. It was of course also famously "readopted" by the Marines.

Even in the Army buys a new pistol, they recently purchased huge numbers pof M9 series pistols. Those will be used for years. Small numbers of 1911s left over from WW2 and old M14s still see use. If there were any .30-06 left in inventory, I imagine Garands would be dropped into Sage stocks and put to use.

Some things last a long time...Our Russian friends still use a cartridge that predates the .30-40 Krag.

I'm not clear on what you posted. Didn't you see the post telling that the M-4 receiver is aluminum alloy, with steel bolt and barrel? The guy who appears to think that the rifle is poly is mistaken. I'm not heavily into black rifles, but did use the M-16 occasionally in the USAF and recall the alloy receivers and synthetic stocks.

My son saw some SAS troopers in Kuwait and in Iraq with the German sidearm, the H-K USP. They seemed happy with it and some Australian SAS have used it in East Timor. German forces use it in Afghanistan. It seems to work. If we need a polymer frame, that might be a good choice, and the gun has a conventional hammer. The handle is a little long/wide for my hand, but is okay.

I think the basic pistol needs at least a four-inch barrel.

...what interested me was the other story on the link regarding a Gentleman who's home was raided because he was growing Okra in his garden! Check it out.

Maybe he wasn't growing it only for personal use..... Black market okra could ruin the local economy.

As far as the military pistol, I don't think it really matters what they finally decide on. It will be outdated when the govt finally decides, and special units will replace the new pistol with 1911s when it is found to be lacking..... :D
