Hey all.

I am not as well versed on the S&W semi-autos like id like to be. I remember back in those years when the 3rd Gen stuff was making its way to dealers cases and to help the shop guys and customers, S&W sent their dealers a plastic wheel that was comprised of 2 or 3 other smaller wheels connected to it that would allow anyone to pick the caliber, then the finish, the action and whatever whatever else and it would show you what 3rd Gen pistols were being made that fit your criteria. Neat little gizmo that made figuring it out a whole lot easier. In fact, I'd like to have one now.

Anyway, I am hoping someone knows of a site that operates something like that wheel or at least will list the pistols that were made in whatever caliber. For instance, I'd like to start looking at local shops and such at a nice 3rd Gen Pistol that would be great for carry. I know a couple models like the 5906, 5904, 6906, 3913, 4316, 4318 and their TSW brothers, and that's about it. If I could find a list or a way that would show the 9mm and 45acp pistols that would work out very well for carry, that would be great. I could then eliminate lots of possibles and focus on the ones I like most or need more researching.

If anyone knows of anything like that, please let me know. It'd be helpful for sure.
Besides, I don't want to have to ask you guys and gals questions about these autos over and over.
Thank you all again for all the help you share with all the other members!

Hi Larry. The ONLY time questions about models are any manner of a hassle in a forum like this one is when other discussions are derailed or a massive slew of new topics bury all the others. If you simply used one thread (this one would be perfect) to ask question after question after question to your heart's delight, anyone who wanted to help could (and would!) help and attempt to answer each and every one. And anyone else who had no interest could simply avoid the one single thread.

The linked resources are all very helpful, but S&W was doing like a zillion different things, some of them for only a really short stretch and they barely ever appear on the market. ALL of them make for interesting discussion...

...here on this discussion forum! :D

Lucky Gunner has a flow chart.

Thank you all very much for the help and info. Now I won't make mistakes like listing wrong model numbers that never existed. I meant to say 4516 and 4513. The 45acp pistols.

Great resources guys. I'll certainly get use out of these.

Have a good and healthy weekend everyone.

Now I won't make mistakes like listing wrong model numbers that never existed.

What happens are crazy 3rd Gen guys spend the next three hours searching and scouring for new models to add to their collection, even if it was only a typo and doesn't actually exist! :D

Lucky Gunner lists the 39 as an alloy frame. Weren't there some steel frames or am I sniffing glue?

There were a few more than 900 examples of a steel frame 39 but in the run of the 39/39-2 from inception to 1982, over 347,000 were produced. So the steel frame examples are rare.

There was also a steel frame 59, but it was called the 147-A. Fewer of those were made.

Whiz Wheel...
539 steel frame. The only steel frame I could ever afford.

Model numbers.........................

Don't forget the FrankenSmiths like the 6915........ a 69xx frame mated to a 915 barrel and slide.

And the Performance Center guns from the 1990s

:D

Somewhere I've got a wheel.................

Bam you could list your personal collection for reference.

LOL...... I got married in 1993 and have lived in the same house since....... one can accumulate a lot of 'Stuff" in 27 years. Can't tell you how many of my "accumulation" were guns "too cheap to leave behind".

During the 16 years from Law School to getting married and settled down don't think I ever had more than a handful of handguns at one time and each served a specific purpose... Suit gun, .22,.45 auto, maybe a couple of .357s 4" for the trips to Penn's Woods and a 2 1/2 then 3" for concealed carry..... added a hi-cap 9mm in about 1989.
