Is there a Smith and Wesson Hell?

I'd also vote for a factory refinish; that way, the others at the matches won't think you're the one who made the gun the way it looks now :)

I had a pre model 10 that was missing about 70% of its finish and had some rust scabs on it. In addition, inside the frame there were a set of large initials scratched in. It was good and tight and had a nice bore. I had it parkerized locally for $80 and it looked like a million dollars. Sold for three times what I paid for it. This job was done by the same gunsmith who did all the parkerizing for the CMP but he's out of business now. So... yes, I would parkerize that revolver. Form follows function.

Blue!

I'll chime in on the factory re-blue. If it was a m10 then ok but there is nothing prettier than a deep blue m-19 (not even an m27 in my book  ) which should be the picture the dictionary for "revolver".

Parkerizing it will just look wrong. I'd leave it beat up rather than doing that. If you got it cheap and it is not heavily pitted, you may even get back most of the $250 if you do try to sell it.

Getting a blued gun parkerized proves that you will eat liver & onions for all eternity in S&W hell, no wallet, no money, and all blue S&W's are $19.95 delivered to your local dealer.:eek:

While your at it, you need to think about bobbing the barrel to 3 inches and round butting the grip frame. I'd consider both these modifications as major improvements to your present shooter in its present condition! You'd only be adding a little elbow grease to the total cost of renovation!

Sorry, but a Model 19 deserves a better finish than parkerizing. That's an Abomination Unto the Lord.
If you are going to parkerize a gun, get a Rock Island Armory .45 semi auto, any CZ /Ruger/ European semi-auto, or any Ruger revolver like this Speed Six:

(I love Rugers, but they tools, not objects of art.)
Or at least a Model 13/10/65/58 or other fixed site S&W. Or possibly a Model 28, like the one shown here:

I'm often full of crap, but at least I admit it. But I believe I'm right about this.

"especially when I am parking several others at the same time. RG's ...."

Why is a gunsmith parkerizing doorstops???????

"users vs collectors" - there will always be two schools of thought on this thread...... but for what Trey will be using the gun for - and where he'll be using it - parkerizing it is a viable option. Perhaps not the nicest finish, but it will serve him well. Sounds like a working gun to me - nothing wrong with that !

Thank you. I have been a collector before but over the past 5 or 6 years have had a shift to no safe queens. I want working guns that i can take out and go shoot. A boomer not a looker. One of the biggest problems in Mississippi with blued firearms is the humidity. Mississippi is renouned for the moisture content in the air during the summer time. Many people swear that in August and September Mississippi is the closest to the Sun of any state (jk) Regardless rust forms very VERY quickly on firearms here. In fact I see rust or the beginnings of rust problems on guns that are just out of the box or have just come from the warehouse. Bluing is beautiful (no doubt about that), but it is just not a super durable finish. I thank everyone for their input on this thread.

I guess I am consigned to S&W Hell. There will be rooms filled with RM's for 3.99 and no wallet or atm in sight, Liver and onions 3 times a day and when I do find my wallet all there will be for sale will be Taurus.

I ran across a 19-4 a couple years ago, that had been in a case which got wet in a fire, and didn't get looked at for some time. The finish was speckled, and some pitting, and looked horrible, but the gun was literally unfired. I acquired it for way below $300. I was looking for something that would take a reasonable amount of abuse, so I had a Metaloy finish put on it. With the cost of the finish I am still well below what the gun would cost as an average used 19-4, and the Metaloy finish wears like iron. I have a Metaloy finish on a 1911 which I have used in competition for 20 years, and it doesn't show any appreciable wear.

I say do what you are comfortable with, it isn't a gun for investment purposes, it's an implement for use.

Well I"d say park it considering your environment. And you definantly dont wont to go to S&W hell as I have been there in my dreams. Yea it was a pretty day and there was this beautiful shooting range with all the accessories and every S&W wheel gun you could think of was there and they were all P&R and new in the box. So I got pretty excited so I went up to the range officer and asked him if I could buy some ammo and he said "Son there aint no ammo in hell" And thats when I woke up in a cold sweat!
