Is This 44HE, 2nd Model Worth >$1K?

FWIW I'd say it's not refinished. The S&W stamp is sharp, the cylinder stud is similarly sharp edged and the back of the recoil shield - has just the right lines to it too.

Not in this photo, but the ejector rod bolt seems to be a bit too proud up front. I'd want to make certain it's properly fitted and holding in solid.

Yes, dsf... I noticed the locking bolt is "proud," as you too saw.
I suspect the locking bolt spring may be compressed (stuck) and in need of a drop of oil to return to "rest."

Hopefully, it'll be there in the morning! :)

Thanks for all the helpful input, everyone.
I sincerely appreciate the special knowledge-base here and especially, the friendliness of this fine forum’s members!

I got the .44HE-2nd Model home and pulled out the cleaning supplies.
There are few things in life I enjoy more than the first cleaning & inspection of a new-to-me firearm.
Ah-h-h, the smell of Hoppe’s No. 9 in the morning! Lol 😝
(Really, I do love it!)

Action is smooth, timing is spot-on, and lock-up is tight.
I'll add that the bore and chambers are perfect!
Evidently, this revolver wasn't used as much as it was carried -and that wasn't too much, either.

Now that I’ve taken a closer look, I’d like to share a few more pictures.
I appreciate your indulgence and input.

It's a ripper!

My suggestion is for you to get a set of Keith Brown Ropers and forget the service stocks that would be proper for this revolver.

Have a look at how a set of KB Ropers spiffed up my 5" Triple Lock:

I have been a gun "refinisher" (and not a half bad one) for a lot of years and did everything from rust blue to color case. Photos don't always make it easy to determine, but I do not believe that old wheel gun has not been refinished. If it has the guy was darned good. All the polish marks and direction of the marks, color, condition of the "corners", stamps and roll marks, indicate to me it's the original factory finish. But, been wrong before, just ask my wife.

With the higher resolution pics, I'm pretty sure that is an original finish (and I didn't think it was from the initial pics either) and as such I think you did extremely well as far as pricing.

What a great revolver. Congratulations and ENJOY!!!

Quick question regarding the grips needed for originality of the OP gun. Would the grips on this 38 Special be the ones needed
