Great discussion everyone. I am glad my purchase has prompted such interest. The gun will be going to the range in the next few days to be used in the way it was designed for. I am now convinced I won't be making a mistake by using it. In fact, from the comments above I think I would be criticized if I didn't enjoy it at the range. I still think the gun has probably been fired very little, if at all, by the previous owner. But it has been handled quite a bit due to some very fine marks on the barrel noticed by one of the posters here. And I believe the cylinder was opened and closed repeatedly judging by the wear marks. The important thing is that the cylinder lockup is very tight, the timing appears to be right on, and with shooting .45 ACP, I don't think I run much risk of "shaking the gun loose" even if I end up firing it a lot.
Bottom line, it is a beautiful, well balanced firearm in a caliber I enjoy shooting. And I feel very lucky to have found it.
