Folks,
I miss the old style DA/SA pistols. I note a couple of security companies at two NE FL airports carry Ruger 95 pistols and the other SIG 2022s.

Should S&W produce a classic style S&W 39 style pistol on a modern synthetic frame.

I would really like to see a 908 type pistol with a narrow synthetic frame.

BUT is there a market?

Geoff
Who is old gray and cynical...humm a S&W 1911 in plastic??

My opinion - to gun enthusiasts, yes. To law enforcement, no. The US military is not changing from their SA/DA service pistol any time soon, so no other company will get any market share from there.

FNH Pistols

Skeptic:

besides the SIG, there is another extremely nice pistol made along the lines you describe and I think it is a real sleeper:

FNH makes the FNP and FNX models of modern, polymer framed high capacity pistol that is DA/SA and hammer fired.

There's also the excellent HK lines- HK45 and 45 Compact,
P2000 and P2000SK; and USP and USP Compact models.

I may eventually get a polymer framed pistol. If I do it will most likely be a FN.

Smith & Wesson's M&P line is nice as far as striker-fired polymer framed guns go, but I'd probably get a Walther PPS first (better, smaller) or maybe even a Ruger SR9c. (pretty much equal in quality and much less expensive)

Yes there is a market. There are still many who came up and were trained on TDA pistols. We prefer them to other platforms.

Sadly, bean counters often influence purchasing decisions, so cheap plastic striker fired guns are more often purchased than the more expensive TDA pistols. Regards 18DAI.

I think there is still a market. CZ came out with there P-07 last year, it is a hammer fired TDA polymer pistol, they also have there SP-01 Shaddow, it a polymer TDA pistol. The Czech Armed Forces selected the Shaddow as there new service pistol. There are also other companys people have said on here; H&K, Sig, FN, Beretta. I dont see the TDA market going any wear soon.

Yes there's a market--with me!

I love the DA/SA of my 4566 and just ordered a 6906, which should arrive tomorrow. I've never felt comfortable with cocked and locked or strikers. I'm much more at ease with a DA/SA with a loaded chamber.

Police department sales leads the gun world and PD wants plastic guns that do not need a gun smith to repair. No one is going to spend the money making a gun for collectors.

I'm assuming you are referring to the OP's question when you say 'gun world' because there is huge market for traditional based guns like 1911A1 and Colt SA revolvers, etc.

Thank you. I was trying to come up with a polite intelligent way of saying that.

There's a market, but I'm afraid it would be lucrative enough for most manufacturers. I much prefer a hammer fired, metal framed gun to a plastic striker fired gun...and I know I'm not the only one. Problem is, I'd buy a couple then I'm done. No contracts for me to buy a few hundred.

It would depend upon what your focus is. In the self-defense and M&P market, yes, manufacturers are leaning towards polymer but I come from different aspect of guns; ie. hunting. Handguns still play a large part in hunting.

My original intent was to buy a big bore revolver to protect against black bears when I'm hunting grouse or fishing. There are a large amount of hunters and fishermen which buy handguns for protection (bear) or to hunt with. Alot bear and pig hunting is done with handguns.

Sure, there's a market, but S&W puts all their eggs in one basket, for some reason. If they continued making 3rd gen pistols, they'd still be selling. They already had the machinery in place to keep pumping them out. I'd buy a 5906 before an M&P any day of the week, and I think the M&P is a nice gun. I just don't like polymer, striker fired guns.

Yes I was. 25 years ago or so when Glock did a presentation to law enforcement in Miami they kept pushing the idea that you did not need a gun smith. I remember the rep saying that the 1911A1 would be gone within 5-7 years. Boy was he an idiot.

This is one of the very frustrating things about S&W. They obviously can still easily make the 3rd gen guns, as they make limited runs for certain LE contracts, and of course they make the 952 Performance Center weapon in 9mm. (Of course the 952 retails for a little over $2000.)

I think they could make runs every year of the

5903
4003
4503
3913
4013
4513
6906
and the Chief's Specials, price them retail at $900 to $1000 and sell every one they make.

And I don't think this would cut into M&P sales all that much.
It just might damage the ego of some marketing guy.

Even Coke realized that "new Coke" was a disaster. I'm not saying the M&P's are a disaster. Just maybe they are the equivalent to "Diet Coke" and S&W needs to also bring back the real thing!

They are smart enough to keep making metal framed, classic revolvers!

It wouldn't satisfy those who want metal pistols, but if S&W made 3d gen autos with a plastic frame (and molded rail), it would certainly be better able to compete cost-wise. A polymer 3913 would be a dream gun for me.

It just seems that the gun world, especially police departments, follow fashions. And the fashion now is "point-n-shoot" striker pistols.

A year ago I had a Glock, in October I bought an M&P and like it so much more than the Glock that I sold that and used the money to by my 4003. Now that I own a 3rd Gen again, I realized how much I missed it and even though I still like my M&P, I like the all metal 3rd Gen more and will probably get another. So as long as I had the funds I would still buy a TDA Smith :)
