Doesn't matter what part of the country ones from, it's the pride that counts. A quotation from Macaulay pretty well defines our family's position: "a people that takes no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors will never achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by remote descendants". We're all (for now) Americans.

Ya know, it's kind of ironic. I lived in Ontario, Canada for 3 years. I was always called a "Yank" there. Never could quite get used to it.

Well Washington wasn't admitted into the U.S. until something like 20 years after the Civil War ended.. so to me it doesn't get to claim Yankee status... being a Union territory doesn't quite cut it. :D

Two truths . . .

1. There are good people everywhere. Truly. We may talk different, but this is a great country of great people.

Now point #2 may shock some people . . .

2. Some Southerners actually want to retire TO the North. Really!


On that second point, I once saw a bumper sticker on a work truck down in Central Florida that PROVES point #2. It read:

"WHEN I GET OLD I'M GOING TO MOVE TO NEW YORK AND DRIVE SLOW!" LOL

That is very true and my great grand pop was on the committee that put this state on the map by golly. Something to be quite proud of I must say. Joe.
 
I can trace moms side the family to the mayflower, the revelution, and the civil war.(North) On dads side he had a older brother and sister born in russia, although they were german. Yet I had 3 blood uncles and another 6 uncles that were dads brother in laws that fought in war 2. I am from wisconsin and worked down south in 62 to 64. That was durring the heigth of the civil rigths thing. Still had segergration then. I was in texas when kennedy got shot. At the time everyone there was whinning about what the nation would "think" about texas. The time I was in texas and louisianna people called me "yank". I was a foreman on a dirty job in lousianna, texas and west virginnia, wisconsin, michigan, oregon and california in those days. I had to hire many guys in those days, and belive me I soon got definet if not right, opinions on the "working ability" of my guys in those days depending on the "location". In the intrest of harmoney I will let you spectulate on that. I will stick my neck out and tell you that when I worked down south it was my luck to find the biggest braggarts and BSers I ever met before or since down there.

I got lucky on that one. I got heavy into geneology about starting 10 years ago. My mothers grandfather was a fuller, and it seems many other family members (Fullers) had done a lot of family research and it was quite easy to trace. Samuel Fuller was on the mayflower. So far on dads side I got back to 1723. My great grandpa came over with a group of relatives in 1874. He lost his wife and a daughter over here, went back to russia, now the ukraine area and remarried. When the old man died my grandad and the rest of the family came over about 1898. Grandpa was married over in russia, came here and had 6 kids lost his wife young. Meanwhile grandma was married and from the same area, lost her 1st husband in russia, (german from same area) had one son, met grandpa over here when she fled russia. She came over with her brother who just got out of the russian army. About 1910 era. Dad was the first of the next batch of 10. That was 17 kids in all!
My family history is no more or less unique than anybody elses. Everybody has history all you have to do is dig and learn some research tools. I just had the intrest and knew some very old relatives. I had one great uncle born in 1865 that was alive in his 90s in the mid 1950s that I knew. I also knew and questioned my grandmothers brother (another great uncle) he had been in the russian army probley durring the russian japanise war in the early 1900s. He also died in the late 1970s at 93 or so.
Most kids could care less about old people or family history. I was different and ate those old timers storys up. Check out your old relatives while you can! Sometimes you might find out something you DIDNT want to know too!

One southern guy I used to work with was a pretty good pipefitter/welder, but he'd miss at least two days of work every single week. He wouldn't even call in, just didn't show up. He would go fishing on these days off. One time, the owner of the company walked up to him and asked why he only worked three days a week...

His answer, "Because I can't pay my bills on two". The boss just walked away, shaking his head.

He didn't last long...
 
Ladder 13 check out this lead. There is a organation know as the wandering volhania`s. What is now the ukraine used to be known as volhannia. Around 1790s katherine the great was married to the czar of russia. She was german. She talked the czar into getting germans to homestead russia with certain perks to draw them. My family and probley yours setteled north eastern ukraine. From several old family members I heard several of my ancesters were the czars personnal bodyguards. Probley recruited due to their heigth as they were "schubans", a sect of huge old germans that were very tall. (my dad and one uncle ran 6ft 5-6"s tall) also I have some very tall nephews, one about 6 ft 8"s.
Anyway my relatives are scattered on that list in various places. Click on the bottom and it takes you to much more info the organation has with old pictures and storys. My grandpa and his brothers all spelled our name different when they came over. I spell it werch, wuerch is the right way. Also wirch, wirtch.

I'm from Oklahoma, parents came from Arkansas and Oklahoma Territory.

Before that, ancestors migrated from east coast...Virginia then to Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri and finally to Oklahoma.

The family on both sides had alligences to the north, however the irony is in my last name. With these clues, you just might guess it. First, it is the name of one of the major players in the Civil War, and it is probably the most common name, place name, etc. in Virginia.

With that, it shouldn't be hard to guess?

Prior to going to Columbia, South Carolina and Fort Jackson for Army basic training in 1959, I had not spent any time in the south. Well, this young Oklahoma kid was shocked. I did see some "regional" differences, and to me, they were significant. People from certain states "stood out" with regard to their attitudes and behaviors. I found it very disturbing.


The civil rights revolution had not taken place then and I just couldn't believe the attitude and actions I saw from some southerners. I particularly noticed a significant "disconnect" between observable behavior towards other people and "professed" religiosity. It was shocking and previously never seen by me. One state stood out beyond all the others, but for this discussion it will go unnamed.

That said, I find "regional pride" kind of a strange thing. I've lived all over the country and could tell you pluses and minuses for each region. Like another poster mentioned, the one thing I did notice was that "people were people", everywhere. In spite of differences, they all were very much the same.

Some of you guys are in the wrong thread. The cracker bashing is supposed to be in the "Southern" thread.

This thread is for extolling the virtues of Northernism. :D

Yes, it is a well known fact that shiftless people, braggarts, bigots, hypocrites, boors, liars, horse thieves, and fools exist exclusively in the Southern states. I have travelled the US extensively, and have never been able to observe these qualities anywhere outside of the South, unless the gene pool was tainted with Southern bloodlines.

All the above is intended as humorous sarcasm. ;)

Fact is, I have travelled the US extensively, and the main difference between regions is the accent.

I don't really care where you are from.
I don't really care what your religion is.
I don't really care about your general politics.
I don't really care about your philosophy on life.

What I do care about is your behavior on this board.

If a guy wants to revel in being Southern, or Northern, or from the NW, or from Jersey, fine.
What, exactly, is the harm in that?
ALL regions have some skeletons in the closet concerning how some group was treated at some time or other. Witness Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews, or the witches of Salem, etc, etc.

For these past months, I have sought to raise the level of courtesy and deportment on this board.
This is how I approach life- I generally maintain a positive attitude. I approach people with courtesy and respect regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin. I'll get through this day, or I will die today. That is just life. I'll do my best to enjoy this day if a good one, or just get through it if a bad one.
I'll maintain courtesy toward others along the way if they let me.

I'm not going to try and change your mind.
I might present an opinion. Take it or leave it.
I might impart some knowledge. Take it or leave it.
I might give some advice. Take it or leave it.
If the advice is about how to behave on this board, you really should consider taking it.

I don't like rude, obnoxious people (boors). I don't understand why people try to vent all their disappointments in society, or history, or politics on a single poster.
Get over it and get a life.

I don't like bullies. They won't last here.

I don't like people obsessed with some negative aspect of life. We've all taken our licks.

Tell us about it once or twice, and let it rest. We don't need to hear it everyday in every thread you enter. If anybody here really cares, you will only lessen their estimate of you by displaying a neurotic obsession.

Well, as long as we're the best at something, I'm all for it. There is always a form of rivalry among different people. In my home town, I live on the westside. We like to say, 'the westside is the best side'.

Everyone should be proud of where they live, that's natural. I believe treating others with civility, is a must. I like Key West because of the differences. I like the north because of the differences. I just really like diversity. Our regional differences are a great part of the reason our nation is so strong. We are a melting pot of cultures.
