With the anniversary of our American holiday rapidly approaching, a few weeks ago I finally got around to transferring all the video we took from my camera memory card to my laptop and stringing it together in a movie.
This morning I was editing the clips I took on the USS Texas.
My father lied about his age and in early 1941, at the age of 15, enlisted in the Royal marines as a Band boy. He never spoke much about his war service to me other than to say he had ships torpedoed out from under him twice in the Med.
While editing those video clips I clearly felt again the sense that came to me on the deck of the Texas. My father served on Cruisers, not Battleships, but he would have been familiar with the construction of ships in the era of the last dreadnought. The marine accommodation on the second deck would have been indelibly marked in his memory. Unfortunately my video camera's battery died part way through the afternoon. I wish I had made that visit a decade sooner so that I could have spoken to him about the Texas before he passed away.
Later today I was going through our meeting with Spook76 and his family at the Buckhorn Saloon in San Antonio. I had not realised how much video I had taken of the museum out back of the Buckhorn's bar. That "Bonnie and Clyde Ford V" recreation really had me fooled.
With the 1 year anniversary commencing on Wednesday I found myself remembering a few things that I had forgotten.
