It's Official: Texas has achieved Third-World Status

Not without skewing the market in other ways. ;)

From the linked article: ".

"The closure of these plants should lead to an increase in wholesale prices in the Netherlands, making the operation of the wind-power projects profitable even without the aid of subsidies".

If you eliminate all the cheaper ways of making power, for sure it's viable. ;)

Look at Germany- highest percentage of wind/solar and also the highest electricity prices in Europe.
Yes, the EU countries will outlaw coal no later than 2038, and the Dutch mandate is 2030. But until then, for the next 9 years, the unsubsidized wind power is marketed side-by-side against coal power, and the article expects the price of coal generated power to be "unviable", leading to early demise.

So, backed up with what? Gas? Probably. Not a lot of coal in the Netherlands. North Sea gas is right there.

Nope not gas, something much more dependable. Tidal power. They've created lagoons by erecting enormous sea barriers lined with turbines. I drove over a couple of them and it's truly awesome.

The North Sea gas isn't going to help the UK much after 2025-30. They are banning new gas heating installations in homes sometime in that window.

Ban new gas boilers in UK from 2025 or risk missing net zero target, says CBI | Gas | The Guardian

The UK Gas Boiler Ban: Everything You Need to Know | The Eco Experts

That's bizarre. All electric? Ironic since the Drax "biofuel" electric plant in the UK is one of the worst polluters in Europe.

I don't see that turning out well.

When I started this thread, I was thoroughly aggravated because I was cold, and I just wanted to rant. I'm impressed with what the thread has turned into. Instead of a few other freezing Texans ranting, it's become a 150-post dissertation on energy generation practices, including some very erudite descriptions of nuclear power plants. It's astonishing how much knowledge of non-gun topics we have within our membership. My guess is that we could put together a team of Forum members that could do a better job of overseeing Texas power system than ERCOT has done. With the Big Gorilla as the team leader, those power plants wouldn't dare be unprepared for next winter!

According to my niece who lives in the Dallas area, FEMA has arrived.

My daughter who lives in Austin didn't mention anything about that, but they are under a boil water order. Oddly, she has heat, electricity, Internet, but no hot water. She lives in an apartment complex, so my guess is that hot water comes from a central boiler system in each building and that is off line for some reason.

I think she has electric heat, but again I'm not sure.

Texans, any help coming from outside the state?

FEMA is supposed to be bring diesel generators, food, blankets, water, to Texas. The article I read had no details about where or when items would be delivered.

Since it will be in the upper 60s by the beginning of next week is much of Texas, things should normalize fairly quickly.

Despite the weather my shipment of premium cigars from Austin arrived Wednesday.

I would suspect that a band of third-graders could do a better job than our over-paid and under-experienced ERCOT wienies have done.

As I see it, one of the biggest problems facing our energy sector (and our society in general) is an over-reliance on academic "qualifications" and an under-reliance on actual hands -on experiernce. One of my regular tasks when I was working for the utility was escorting the new crew of college graduates through and around the power plant. The number of times I saw (and cringed) as one would be walking along, oblivious to his/her surroundings with their hand on a steam line was shocking. Now they may be well up there in smarts. but they have no experience (and the way you gain experience is making, or watching other people making, mistakes). We would hire a 21-year-old college graduate with a BS in Mechanical Engineering at 75 K per year, while not hiring the 40-year-old Chief of the Boat as anything other than a grunt maintenance man. When I left, nuclear power had become the submarine admiral's full-employment program.
