I guess most people are crazier than a soup sandwich. If they weren't we wouldn't be toting around hand cannons around town right??? Well the crazies just seem to get crazier around the holidays so I wanted to discuss some real world strategies and life stories of your encounters. I dont know about you but I live in a big city in the south and its pretty bad and getting worse. Since I have been typing this in the past five minutes there has already been two shootouts of multiple handguns that I just heard close to my neighborhood. I had a chalk outline of a young kid 10 yards from my front door that was the victim of a full auto AK 47. A few days ago the gas station down the road from me had an armed robbed twice right before I pumped gas and than right afterwards. When I got home from work yesterday I watched a prowler from my front balcony with a crowbar and a LED flash light look into all the vehicles in my neighborhood. I have beefed up some security in the past few months. The police are some what efficient around here but you cant fully count on them. Its just me and my girlfriend living in this appartment. I taught her how to use a firearm and she is somewhat proficient at it. What strategies and real world experiences have worked for you and what things were you glad you have done to make yourself and your loved ones more safe? Thanks!

My first suggestion would be that you need to move to a better neighborhood!

Maybe even move to a a better city - or farther from the city.

If I had all the stuff you've describe go down around my house I'd be out of there come hell or high water.
Yes of course I will be moving but cant right now. In the mean time I am stuck here for maybe another 6 months or more.

Get an alert guard dog, cut back the shrubs, increase the exterior lighting, convex mirrors in blind spots , put bullet traps like bookcases and file cabinets along the outside walls, and add CCTV. Wear body armor, and train your girlfriend in tactics.

Sounds awful there.

I doubt he was shot with a full auto AK but sucks none the less.

Nothing really bad here. I live in the suburbs of a large metro area. Up here everything is quiet. In the city it's business as usual. Nothing out of the ordinary

Wow! Man, your neighborhood makes Watts sound like Lake Tahoe! I'd have a new zip code asap!

If your local PD still uses chalk outlines then it's time to move lol

I live in small town America. Lots of shooting going on, mostly at ducks, pheasants and deer. Every Thursday, the trap club shoots clays. The school trap club is growing and popular. About half the houses have guns, judging from the number of duck boats or hunting dogs. We don't have a town cop. You break into someones house, we call the sheriff and the neighbors show the cops photos of the thief, and call your mother to let her know what is going on. We don't have a lot of crime. We talk to our neighbors, and seem to have each other backs.

We used to live in the Washington DC area and my wife worked across the street from the Pentagon.
After terrorists crashed a plane into the Pentagon and the next day I dropped my wife off in a big cloud of black smoke, we decided enough's enough.
With the radio playing, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," we packed up our apartment and moved away from the terrorists, criminals and bureaucrats. Bought a house in a small town mountain town in West Virginia and we've been lovin' here ever since.
Best move ever!

First "weapon of choice" is situational awareness. Sounds like you both have it. Try to make yourself a "hard target" any way you can. Been where you are, more than once. Joe

And lots of claymores.

A big "Roger that" on the Claymores, and don't forget the "instruction label" on the one side of the Claymore: "This side towards enemy"........I don't think that is modern lawyer talk to avoid litigation....methinks it may prove not beneficial to the placer of the Claymores to misinterpret this one!:)

Don't let your finger prints get on the claymore or the clicker. When you set that sucker off, throw the clicker way far from your apartment. Main problem is: where to find a live claymore.

Hope you alerted police to the guy breaking into the cars ..

I suggest you sleep in an interior room in the apartment if there are that many stray shots being heard !!

Be very alert going into and leaving the building .. am guessing its has multiple apartments in it .. if you have a car drive around the block and check things out before parking .. look around before exiting your vehicle .. a little caution might be a life saver ..

if you have a conceal carry permit I would carry with it in a jacket pocket with hand on the weapon ready to use ..

Move as soon as your able to !! Always be cautious and aware of your surroundings don't have your nose in your phone .. as an instructor once said to me listen to where your going ..

You asked:

First, I always practice the famous color coded situational awareness routine. I pay attention to everything. Since I live alone and have no immediate family with me I have to let my family take care of themselves wherever they are.

At home I have dogs (they're not the best guard dogs but they're okay), an alarm system, and I am always armed. Always.

That's the best I can do real world. My neighborhood is essentially a quiet one; my big southern city that I live in is as good or as bad as most places and I just pay attention all the time.

Sidebar: Are you sure someone used a full auto AK-47? That would be extremely unusual - full auto weapons are virtually never used in crimes in America. But the media hypes that, anyway.
