I have a 36 (no dash) snubby that I've been doing a lot of dry firing on, trying to smooth it up a little. Like a total idiot I did it without putting snap caps in place, and now the tip of the hammer nose has broken off. Assuming that I can find the part, I can probably swap it out myself. My concern is, if the hammer nose got peened to the point that it failed, is there any likelihood that the rest of the hammer has been compromised as well and might fracture at some future time?

Oh, and if anybody has a pointer to a replacement hammer nose (and maybe the roll pin too), I'd appreciate it.

I would say your hammer is probably fine. An N & L frame hammer nose has a spring behind; K & J nose pins do not. I have used two center punchs and a 1/8" pin punch. If you plan to re-use the rivet, you can drive it out with the 1/8" pin punch. If you plan to use a new rivet, you can use a 7/64" drill bit in a press to BARELY remove some of the rivet flare to make removal a bit easier. Position one center punch in a vise pointed vertically upward. Easier to have another person hold the hammer/rivet/nose assembly on the point of the center punch. Use the second center punch to deliver a sharp rap to the rivet with a small ball peen hammer (to flare the rivet). Turn the hammer over and apply another sharp rap. Closely inspect to be sure your rivet flare is adequate on both ends.

There may be some members that have other methods.

While the rivet can be reused if carefully removed with a punch, I have always replaced them as I feel it is a much better and more professional repair. Reusing a rivet can work, but they were never really meant to be reused.

OutWest50 above has laid out the basics quite well! Nothing really to add.

Your hammer, if no signs of other failure checks out, should be A-OK to use with the new hammer nose (firing pin).

OK, looking at photos online I just assumed it was a roll pin holding it in place, not a rivet. I agree it's better to replace the rivet with a new one. Getting it out and a new one back in is however, almost certainly beyond my feeble smithing skills and equipment. So I'll find a local smith to do the job for me. I'm grateful for all you guys' input and advice, thanks!
