Roscoe

No idea if it’s true, but it sounds good...

Writer Dashiell Hammett was a Pinkerton detective that worked on the infamous Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle rape and murder trial investigation and later he started writing crime novels and was know for his salty, hardboiled language with colorful slang.
He created Sam Spade and one famous Sam Spade line was "I jammed the roscoe in his button and said, 'Close your yap, bo, or I squirt metal.'"

“Roscoe” was used in old gangster/detective stories from the 1920’s and 30’s for handguns, but if it had an earlier origin in slang ... I dunno.

The writer, Dashiell Hammett, created Sam Spade and one of Spade’s lines was "I jammed the roscoe in his button and said, 'Close your yap, bo, or I squirt metal.'"

I just always liked it.

I think you nailed it, the explanation I found below is almost exactly what you said, just added where he got the name Roscoe from Fatty.

They never really did much for me, until I rescued a beat up and neglected 1969-70 Model 36.

Since then I've been hooked, I have 4 now.

Two nickel and two blue, ranging in years from about 1956 to 1984ish.

...my 36 no dash...

...as Obi-Wan Kenobi said...

..."An elegant weapon for a more civilized time"...
