I did some shooting today and while cleaning my 637-2 Airweight I noticed this wear pattern. The extractor rod collar is contacting the frame below the barrel. I can feel it pretty good with my fingernail. This gun has less than 50 rounds fired.

Since the damage is completely encircling the barrel or forcing cone, that barrel to me is defective.
I wonder if they use forged barrels and what your seeing is slag on the outside of the barrel?

I would have them put another barrel on it.

I think he's referring to the semi-circular mark on the frame, just below the barrel, around the ejector rod clearance cut. Looks like the gas ring may be hitting there. My 340PD has a similar-but-not-identical mark after about 1k rds.

Is a J frame like a K,L,N frame and the pattern on the frame below the barrel is from the yoke where it contacts the frame? Thrust surface? I originally thought he was refering to the shiny spot you see on the barrel lug where the latch(?) engages the extractor rod. Tom

Gearhead Jim, my mistake you are right it is the gas ring gently touching the frame, just below the barrel

The semi circle ring is not that bad by the picture. Some guns have a mark there if they are fired.
As long as the yoke swings open and closed easily, don't worry about the wear mark.
The barrel looks messed up to me. In time the airgap will become excessive and the side blast will be quite annoying.

Barrel looks to me like it has lead on it from the bullets. Were you using lead? If it is lead, you may have enough on the gas ring to cause it to drag.

I have the same marks on my new 642-2 were the gas ring is slightly rubbing the frame when the cylinder is opened and closed.
Seems to be somewhat normal. what do you guys think?
I have 105 rounds of Winchester white box FMJ 38 spl ammo through this 642-2

Guys, every J frame I've ever seen has the gas ring integral with the yoke. There is a lug at the front of the yoke on all the S&W revolvers that's supposed to contact the frame to provide positive location to the yoke during firing.

The marks on the frame appear to be consistent with proper location of the yoke.

I just had a look at my four J frames..
The two all stainless 940s the front of the yolk does touch the frame but doesn't make a mark there..
On my 342Ti the yolk is aluminum alloy as is the frame, you can see a contact "rubb" but no apparent gouge..
On my 642-0 the yolk is stainless & the frame aluminum & there is a mark present on the frame were it fits together..
