As a former CT resident and person who hiked and biked all over the northeast before moving west the bear concern seems fairly bogus. For S&Gs I took a look at the stats of Maine and New Hampshire (you can check the rest if you'd like, but these are some of the least developed of the new england states), and they had their last recorded fatal bear attacks in the 1830s and late 1700s, respectively.
Pocket carry of anything remotely heavy is also quite annoying due to the sag of that side of the jacket, the inability to get to the gun if you're wearing a belt on your pack, and if it's cold enough that you're wearing a heavy coat you're either keeping your hands in your pockets, which I don't love to do with a gun in there, or wearing gloves which becomes another hassle.
Your largest real concern are two legged predators, but if the bear worry is more of a reason to carry a larger revolver than anything else, which is totally fair, look into something like these:
Hill People Gear | Real use gear for backcountry travelers
I've got one of the originals that I use with all my fly fishing gear, and bring a handgun with me when I feel like it in areas of MT, WY, and AK where nature becomes a concern.
