Again, what do a bunch of French cartoonists have to do with killer communists

I've already explained that they were communists. The magazine was a pornographic communist comic book. Observing all these Americans, presumably many of whom are Christians, expressing "I am a pornographic communist comic book that mocks Christ" is quite absurd.

That's all I'm going to say on this matter any more.

The French do things thier own way no matter what. How or if they respond will be French in nature and none of us will get it.....they are unique my nature......lest we forget WWII and their approach to another world terrorist by the name of Adoph.
The initial British response to Hitler was equally impotent. Recall, the British Expeditionary Force was LEAVING the continent at Dunkirk, not INVADING.

I'm the last person to defend the performance of the French military in 1940. But this isn't 1940. If ANYBODY does the Neville Chamberlain thing today, it's going to be US.

It remains to be seen what the French will do. Let's wait to see what it is. It might be brilliant. It might be mind numbingly stupid. But we'll have to SEE it first before we can judge it.

What's interesting is that those whom he cites (Faurisson, etc.) are, apart from immigration, largely on the SAME sheet of music as the Islamists. Remember, Himmler was the patron of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who was in turn the patron of the Handschar Division of the Waffen SS.

I well remember that immediately prior to 9/11, Dr. William Pierce (now dead), then leader of the neo-Nazi National Alliance published an article PRAISING the Afghan Taliban for their infantile hatred and xenophobia.

Flying rats of a feather...

Good point.I had also forgotten about Himmler and his relationship with the Grand Mufti.

I don't need to think about my support for people who died in service to some of the same ideals enshrined in the U.S. constitution before I "jump on the bandwagon". Apparently some do...

No love for Communism here, but those murdered were idealists who held firmly to principles of free expression in spite of being, literally, firebombed, harassed, stalked, threatened, and publicly marked for execution by proven killers.

And in the face of actual peril, these people didn't back down where many others would.

So, yeah, I'd've disagreed with them on innumerable matters political and social, but you bet I'll sing their praises over a common cause that happens to be fundamental to a free society, a cause they knowingly and willingly placed their lives on the line for and ultimately sacrificed themselves to.

Bandwagon here I come...

Thats the other thing one has to say about them--they had "NADS."

What's absurd is your not recognizing the difference between...oh...what was that old saying? You know, that Founding Father one?

Something about disagreeing with what someone says...but...oh...it's on the tip of my tongue...defending something about their right to say it?

Yeah, something like that...

Do you remember "The name of the rose" from Umberto Ecco's book? These fundamentalists feel a deep-rooted hatred of humor, insolence and liberty of thinking.

Je suis Charlie

I wonder how many of those proclaiming "I/we are Charlie" realize the magazine's deceased staff were hardcore communists who not only crudely mocked Mohammed but also Christ, among others?

Just something to think about before jumping on a bandwagon...

La liberté de penser peut-elle se passer de la liberté d'expression ?
The freedom to think she can do without freedom of expression?

Free speech doesn't allow yelling "fire" in a crowded theater.

The lines of common decency were crossed a long time ago. There's a reason we don't talk religion here.

Certain topics and symbols should be off limits.

Some of their cartoons really crossed the line of what tolerance is all about. I don't see anything to celebrate here any more than I would walk around with my hands up.

Sorry, in advance for the dinging I'm surely going to get. I will assume the position now.

Good post but--trouble is--is that the terrorists constantly cross any line than can cross. Those trouble makers are insane and cant be reasoned with.

I wonder if this is another case of: "It all starts at home?"

Not a Founding Father, but the French philosopher Voltaire.

Yelling fire can get a lot of people killed but expressing your opinion should not get you killed.
