I always remember his guest spot on the Andy Griffith show when he was a ne'er do well shirttail relative that needed help after he lost his job playing music for the risqué show shut down by Andy in the county fair.

I remember him in the John Wayne movie , " McClintock " . He was called , " Junior " in the movie . Wanted to start calling on McClintocks daughter (the lovely and beautiful Stephanie Powers ) . He played his 4 string banjo several times in the movie . He was also on the show " Coach " . It ran for a lot of seasons .

Sad news indeed. I really enjoyed his humor.
He will be missed by me, at least.

Dick's younger brother. Turned down Gilligan's Island role as Gilligan for starring role in My Mother the Car...funny, clean and talented guy. He will be missed.

He also turned down the role of Barney on The Andy Griffith Show when Don Knotts announced he'd be leaving the series.

He was a lot more talented than people gave him credit for, and he labored in his older brother's shadow for the longest time until he landed the role on Coach.

Dick Van Dyke actually recommended he take the role in My Mother the Car. After that show tanked, Jerry Van Dyke said he'd never take his brother's advice again.

Yes, he will be missed.
