John Wayne And William Holden shooting a Model 29

As many of you probably know "The Horse Soldiers" was loosely based on an actual event known as Grierson's Raid. It was a very successful intrusion into Confederate Territory commanded by a public school music teacher from Jacksonville, Illinois. He was married and lived in Jacksonville. His house still stands in very nice condition and he is buried in a cemetery in that town. Hollywood did take a lot of liberties with the facts in the movie but it was an excellent film.

Another JW movie, Rio Grande (1950), was also loosely based on history, namely Col Ranald Mackenzie’s 1873 Remolino raid on the Kickapoo. Mackenzie launched the raid from Fort Clark, TX, crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico. I have a second home on Fort Clark, and my granddaughter is named Mackenzie in his honor. She is now starting her Army career in the early commissioning program at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell.
