Ok, big John Wayne fan here, forever. Seen most of his movies at least twice. So this afternoon and evening I watched two. Hatari, which I had not seen since i was a kid, and Brannigan that I watched once in my 20s. I thoroughly enjoyed both. Hatari had me laughing out loud at some parts, and Brannigan was Coogan's Bluff in London...good fun both. One thing i liked about the Duke. It was like the adage, "Take your work seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously." Seems John Wayne always put a bit of humor in MOST of his movies. I wish I'd had the chance to shake his hand.

Join the crowd. There are very few JW movies I don't like. The guy had more movie savvy both in front of the camera and behind than almost all of today's hotshot actors.

One of the favorite online exercises amongst John Wayne fans is to list his ten best movies and then cuss and discuss your choices versus someone elses'. In a nice, respectful way of course.

1. The Searchers
2. Red River
3. El Dorado
4. Rio Grande
5. The Quiet Man
6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
7. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
8. Stagecoach
9. The Undefeated
10. The Sands of Iwo Jima
10a. The War Wagon

Of course, on different days, when I am in different moods, this list could change.

It is an okay list but not having "Rio Bravo" in it puts it at risk. Never was a fan of "The Undefeated" or "The War Wagon" but they were ok IMHO. I would replace them with "Rio Bravo" and "The Comancheros" and I also think "In Harm's Way" deserves a shoutout.

In Harm's Way and Wake of the Red Witch top my list.

Trivia question: In how many movies did Wayne's character die?

Well, Pilgrim, that's a good list and I, too, have seen them all many times as a long-time Wayne appreciator. There are a few on your list that I would drop if we were only listing top ten, and then I would add:

They Were Expendable
Angel and The Badman (rarely seen or even mentioned Western)
Hondo (in 3D!)

I thought I had seen all his movies until I bought the book with every movie.
The Duke made a bunch of B Westerns before Stagecoach.
I also thought I knew all the Hank Williams songs until I got the book.
Hank wrote a bunch of B Movie level songs!

For a large group of men who grew up watching John Wayne, it would be impossible to limit his "Best" to just 10 movies. I love them all and watch any of them I get a chance to watch whenever I can. I have to say that he was truly an idol when I was a kid and tens of millions of people world wide followed his exploits.

Bwahahahahahahahaha.

Angel and the badman, great movie, what a great name, Quirt.

The singin sandy stuff early 30s wuz great for a fun watch.

Years ago Franklin mint had a commemorative 45 for his war movies, I paid as much for it as my gold cup.

"Rio Lobo " contains one of my favorite scenes.
Wayne and his party have bivouacked for the night. He wakes up, finds the girl snuggled up next to him.
Wayne: "What are YOU doing here!?"
Girl: "Well you're more comfortable than he is."
Girl gets up, gathers her thing, and leaves.
Wayne: "I've been called a lot of thing before, but COMFORTABLE ?"

Seven screen deaths at least plus he'd already died
at beginning of "The Man Who Shot
Liberty Valance."

Now name the two in which he drowned
inside a diving suit, his air hose being
broken.

And after that name at least three films
in which he sheds tears/cries. The sniffle
in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" doesn't
count.
