Johnny Carson!

Carson was good,Letterman was great when he was young, but he hung on too long.Conan does a bad Bob Hope impression.Leno,I just never got.

Allen was brilliant and hilarious. Carson was unique, a mixture of wit, broad knowledge, interviewing skill--he had it all.

Never was inordinately fond of Parr.

Merv Griffin? Nope. Joey Bishop? HELL no.

Arsenio Hall was pretty pathetic.

Neither Letterman nor Leno, especially Leno, ever did a damn thing for me. I wouldn't watch them. Leno's softball interview questions were hopelessly lame and, I believe, shared with the guests before taping.

I enjoyed Craig Ferguson, the mad Scot who was very, very proud to have become a U.S. citizen.

Some of the newer ones are quite good, but not replacements for Carson or Allen.

Carson was great, he could actually carry a conversation with a person.

Leno was not funny, Fallon has the sense of humor of a middle schooler.

Tried them all but don't watch any of them.

Johnny Carson had a quick wit, and often took advantage of a guest's innocent statement.
Mrs. Palmer, Arnie's wife, was a guest, and to make conversation Johnny asked her, "What do you do to wish your husband good luck before a big tournament?" She responded, "I kiss his balls."
Johnny couldn't resist......... "I bet that made his putter stand up."
The audience went wild with laughter.

I really enjoyed his show, music too.

I saw that show. Still brings a smile.

...as far as Conan is concerned, he's an idiot and I can't even stand to watch his commercials.

You're entitled to your opinion and can dismiss Conan O'Brien as an idiot all you want, but that's about as far from the truth as you can get.

I have a good friend who went to Harvard with O'Brien. He knows him quite well, and says that somewhat goofy personna is strictly for fun and the entertainment industry. He does have a wicked sense of humor and satire.

O'Brien majored in American History and graduated Magna cum laude from Harvard in 1985. He still occasionally gives talks on the arts and humanities at Harvard.

Is he Johnny Carson? No.

An idiot? Absolutely not. Not even close.

A little trivia on the Carson/Ames hatchet bit:

I happened to be watching the program live that nite and the other guest sitting on the couch was the longtime Jewish comedian Myron Cohan. When there was a lull in the laughter he quipped "IF he vasn't Jewish before this he's Jewish now!" I suspect that was cut out over the years due to political correctness.

The wife and I watched a show last night. Roger Moore and Maureen Stapleton were the guests. The night before (tv time) she had just won the Oscar for "Reds".

Great memories.

Johnny was the best.I dont know how many times He got in trouble for some rather racy remarks.I still get a laugh out of the Zsa Zsa Gabor incident.
But like was said,He was the King of late night T.V.

Wasn't it Steve Allen who said we should all give up and become Communists, rather than resist? I never respected him after that remark.

i enjoyed Steve Allen...he was very good.....Johnny Carson was THE grandmaster of late night TV....following him are ....just cant make the grade.... wannabees.....

Okay, so he went to Harvard, and he is smart. But as far as a late night host on a talk show, he sucks canal water.

Some one once said that if Johnny invited You to sit on the Couch Your Career was made.

Don't be silly. EVERYONE who goes to Havahd is quite intelligent and nuanced.:D

I'm particularly impressed with the Hasty Pudding rituals.

It's funny that Ed Mcmahon sat there next to Johnny for 30 years, and he never had a career, he was just a side kick :)
