In spite of being made in May, 1962, this one is a four-screw Model 10-2, with the extra screw in front of the trigger guard. It's as new in the box, unfired since it left the factory, with the original box, tools and papers. The stocks are well-fitted, and numbered to the gun.

I love it when you can find even a common gun in such fine condition after so many years, in this case half a century.

How and where did you find such a beauty?

In January of '07, a buddy of mine and I had just exited a big gun show at the Arizona State Fair Grounds in Phoenix; neither of us had connected with any firearm that seemed to ring our chimes. At any rate, also on the grounds was a good-sized antique show. We decided to go in and browse, since it was free! I walked in the door, and in the first row of goodies, under glass, was this Model 10. I asked to examine it, and it showed absolutely no sign of ever having been fired; no turn ring, no firing residue anywhere. The owner had tied it hammer down so that it could not be cocked. I looked it over carefully, and we struck a deal; a good one at that.

It's a safe queen now; I have plenty of other shooters, but this one is in exceptional condition. You never know what will turn up where!

Can you post a pic of the top of the box? I'd like to see how it's marked.

S&W Model 10-5 SN?

New guy at this....how do I find the year my Model 10-5 was produced? Serial number begins win D773xxx.
Thanks,

The D750001 - D870000 serial numbers were produced in 1975-1976. Information from the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve, appreciate the fast response. I just punched this used gun which is nickel plated. Any suggestions on cleaning/

Very nice!
I found a dash two ( 5 inch ) in the same condition, posted it over in the '61 to '80 forum... http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1961-1980/254737-mod-10-2-1962-3-screw.html ... and I have a question.

Does the other end of your box have a "stick on" label with the revolvers info, or a silver square as in picture #2 in my thread?

This box is the only one I've seen like that and your serial number should be close to mine ( C 550xxx range).

Thanks!

GF

There are no common Model 10's to me! It's my favorite S&W model, along with the 64.

Just a good old .38 service revolver!

it would be hard for me not to shoot it.:)

Here's a pic of the top of the box, and the other (right) end of the box, which is plain, with no stick-on label. The serial # is C5774XX, verified by S&W Historian Roy Jinks as having been shipped in May of 1962 (One of the advantages of being a member of the S&W Collectors Association). The serial number is hand-written on the bottom of the box with a white grease pencil. I have no doubt that the box is original to the gun.

Great Smith!!! Better you getting it instead of me. ( I don't think that I could keep myself from shooting it)I have only had 1 gun in my life that left me unfired. I have an old grannie M&P that I still shoot. Shipped June of 1919, w/6" barrel. A good shooter! Enjoy that beautiful 10! Bob

Someone put this up for sale locally. What do you think it is worth.

Thanks for posting. It makes me feel good to know that such treasures are out there. The Model 10 is a real diamond.

Thanks for shariing, it's great to see something that's 50 years old survive in such pristine condition. The bluing sure looks exceptional for a "lowly" Model 10.

There were so many of these guns made and in spite of this, the fit and finish was just amazing. That's why so many of us love these old S&W's.
