Just curious, how many carry spare ammunition?

It's been a while since the topic came up, and there are lots of new faces, etc. Thus I was curious how many carry a reload (or several, including "New York" ones) currently. For those that aren't familiar with the term, a "New York reload" is a term for a second gun.

I carry one or two spare mags for my Sig, and generally stick a J frame in my pocket.

3 extra G31 mags in my day pack...

I don't want to die for a lack of shooting back ...

Most always a speed strip in my pocket for the 60 or 642. Speedloaders in consoles of both rides...always...(Yes, I know. )...occasionally in jacket pocket or on belt.

When toting the P7-M8 there is an extra mag on my belt.

The 60 or 642 (just one!) has become my EDC. The semi-auto is now carried just on occasions when wearing a suit or sport coat.

Always an extra mag for my 1911. Depending where I am going, it may be more + second gun. More ammo always in the truck. In my part of the country, a rifle in the truck is also common, not so much for defense but for vermin. It is a multi function tool.

I'm presently carrying a 5" 629 strong side IWB (Sparks VM-II), a 2 1/4" Taurus 605 in the weak side front pocket (Mika pocket holster) and a NAA Black Widow in my strongside front pocket (hobo holster). I have an El Paso Saddlery cartridge slide with six extra rounds for the Smith on my Beltman belt and a speed strip of 125 gr. Remingtons for the Taurus in my watch pocket. I don't carry a reload for the Black Widow.

I am an advocate for the New York Reload. I even carry spare ammo for it as well as my primary.

On a daily basis, my EDC gear consists of this:

Glock 22 in a Galco "Combat Master" OWB holster along with a spare mag and a Surefire G2 flashlight in a Galco "MFP" on a 1.75" Wilderness Instructor belt with the C.S.M. insert.

My BUG is a Smith & Wesson J frame model 38 (no dash) Airweight "Bodyguard" in my front left pocket in a DeSantis "Nemesis" pocket holster and a Bianchi Speed Strip in my front right pocket.

I also carry a pair of Smith & Wesson model 100 handcuffs in a Galco cuff carrier, an Uncle Henry 55UH liner lock folder, a CRKT M16-13M folder and a Surefire L4 "Digital Lumamax" flashlight.

Yeah...I was taught the "Two is one/One is none" philosophy.

Spare ammo is one of those things that if you need it, you need it real bad! Might as well take some along, and maybe bring more than you think you might need, just in case.

experience with MaxFire speedloaders

Two speed loaders with me any time I carry

I've used HKS speedloaders with my K frame Smiths for many years with great success. Have started to CCW carry my 36-1 but J frames are inheriently small and HKS speedloaders difficult to use ... especially with rubber Pachmyar grips.

Saw a testimonial for the MaxFire speedloaders and ordered a pair. They're made out of soft rubber and easier to get started in the chambers, but even harder to slide past the rubber grips than the hard plastic HKS.

I also ordered the MaxFire speedloader pouch for two. It might work well on a duty belt but it's like trying to conceal a bazooka for CCW. Just my experience.

I'm still looking for a way to carry spare ammo so will try speed strips next.

A friend of mine carries a pair of speed strips in an open top cell phone pouch like this one.

It's a simple open top pouch, holds a pair of speed strips and simply clips to your belt or the waistband of your gym shorts. You might give it a try.

Also, if you want a more "traditional" and ACTUAL speed strip carrier, I have one of these from Dillon Precision that is awesome!

Thanks for sharing. I've actually used an open top cell phone pouch for carrying a J frame HKS speedloader and it works fairly well. I'd be concerned a speed strip would fall out, but I'll try it when I experiment with speed strips.

The Dillon pouch looks like the perfect solution ... not cheap but then Dillon is proud of the good stuff it carries!

Always! it is just correct etiquette to reload after you have spent a few rounds,,after all im not a heathen..

ALLLLLLLLways!! Typically, I carry two backup mags for my primary and a speed strip or backup mag for #2, depending on what my BUG-of-the-day is. Sometimes I carry more, rarely, less. If I switch to a higher-capacity primary (my usual one holds 8+1), I may only carry one spare mag.

I used to carry two six-round Bianchi Speed Strips to reload my snubnoses.
I have switched to Quick Strips from Tuff Products. The ones I have hold eight .38 rounds but I load six with a space between each pair of rounds. That speeds up loading a bit.

When I carry an auto pistol I also carry an extra magazine.
