Hi there! I'm new to this forum. A couple of months ago I picked up a fairly decent condition 5" 5 screw M&P at a gun show in Sebring FL. What got my attention was that it had a rework star, and it had the letters S.R.D. stamped under the cylinder on the left side. The serial# is 680925. Since I hate not knowing mysteries... like not knowing what in the world S.R.D. means, I spent the $50 to find out. The letter came back from Roy the other day. Gun was shipped on October 3, 1939 to the State Road Department, of the State of Florida. My question is, have any of you out there come across any other M&P's marked SRD? It's my understanding that the S.R.D. later was turned into the Florida Highway Patrol. I have to say I do love these old M&P's Looking forward to shooting this one soon.

Welcome to the Forum! Sounds like an interesting old gun that may yield more information with further research. We'd love to see pictures, ... and enjoy shooting it.

I was at the Sebring show. Shucks it was easy 'cause I live here. How did I miss that one? Guess I was busy looking for the neat 640 in .38Spl that I was looking for and found at a very decent price.

Florida Highway Patrol was always fond of 5" Smiths. Most famous one is the 5" bright nickel plated Highway Patrolman Model 28. Only 25 ever existed.

Love to see pics of the M&P. Thanks

The letter took about a month. I've heard that it can take longer, so a month was no problem. It is nickel finished, the finish looks original. The rework date was November 1955, no idea what was done, as the letter does not mention it. As for photos I did try, but the upload failed for some reason. My camera is set for very high resolution, so perhaps that was it. I took it apart, and gave it a real nice cleaning, got all the 50+ year crud out. It has a real nice crisp break on single action.

You can resize the picture before uploading it. Open in with a
jpg ( or whatever ) viewer, click to Edit the picture, then you should
find a resize option. Make it 50% or 40% of its original size, and it
should upload easily.
