I'm interested in hearing anyone's thoughts concerning water purification. I'm thinking of a type for if ever there's a natural or civil emergency where the only water source may be hot pond water or something along those lines.
I've read up on a number of "types", reverse osmosis types, and on and on.
I've read all I can possibly absorb at the moment, it's time ask someone else's thoughts to add to the muddle.
This assumes no electricity and that only really nasty water is available to begin the filtration process.
Thanks in advance.

I have a Pro One system, have not tried dirty water just my well water Has a ceramic filter which is good for 6 months the way I use it. Will not last as long if you are using dirty water.

Here are a couple of options:

We use the Berkey Filters. We started using them when we had city water and could not tolerate the chlorine. The Berkey removes it and a lot of other chemicals. It will also remove gasoline from water but that shortens the life of the filters. We have two, one in the house and one for travel. Either can be used in an emergency.

We have moved to a more rural area. Wells, cisterns and ponds are drinking water sources. I have not problems, as long as the water goes through the Berkey first.

Kevin

I will second the Berkey.

If the water is really nasty, and I have used really nasty water, I pour it through a paper towel to get most of the dirt out, then pour it through a coffee filter to get the other stuff out. Then I run it through the Berkey.

I happen to live in my "BUGOUT LOCATION"

We have a deep well (~200 feet) and a suitable generator.
My next door neighbor has a similar depth well, but, his is artesian.

So, we have drinking water,,

If that water is contaminated,, the world, and us has more problems than water,,,,,,

Another vote for the Berkey. We have the 3 gal size, enough for drinking and coffee 2 or 3 days. Extra benefit; went from 30 or 40 plastic bottles a week to maybe a dozen a month. City water has more chlorine than a pool and "particulates" that clog a shower head in a year. Essential, here. Joe

I keep a back-packing water filter and 100 coffee filters and a collapsible water jug in evert bug out bag/ bug in Kit. And a dozen coffee filters and a brand-new life straw in every vehicle's get home Kit.

The portables are the PUR brand and run $100-120 and are good for 1000L or more and filter to .2 Micron.

There is also a 4-ounce bottle of bleach in every first aid kit. 3 drops per gal of clear water will meet city water standards after 1/2 hour. 3 drops per quart for suspect creeks after 1 hour.

Ivan

We had a new well put in. The water is so much better than the old well. But we still have a bit of alkali. Makes fair coffee and tea even after going through the House filter and RO. For coffee and tea we get bottled water refilling them at Wally World. Maybe 20 gallons a month

Thanks

...to all who responded. I now have a little more info to mull over.
I sure didn't know that chlorine bleach deteriorated in such a short period of time.
When I make a decision I'll follow up.
Thanks again to everyone.
