Just picked up a M&P 15-22 (problems and fixes)

M&P 15-22 issues

Three weeks ago went out and bought one for myself and one for my son. His broke after the first 50 round and mine broke after approx 250 rounds. We had lots of FTF it almost became a joke with my son telling me just how many FTF we were having. I tried 5 different 22lr brands to see if that was an issue and let me tell you the CCi Stingers were just as bad as the cheep Bobcats. But I will say when it worked it was a blast to shoot and it will be one of my favorite guns. I did notice the problem I had was one that a lot have had. I also have a a Performance Center 357mag model 327. Bought it 1-1/2 years ago, I also had problems with it from the start. Sent it in and it has been flawless since the day I got it back. I did get my guns back today and I have been reading that they send back extra clips with the guns... Well mine did not have any clips with them at all... So I do not know if it is true or false but it sure would have been nice...

I am new to this forum also. I just got two mags from S&W which I ordered a couple of weeks ago. I had called about them and was told that they were on back order and had been shipped that day. That is why you didn't get them. They have them now. Also, I bought my M&P 15-22 a couple of weeks ago from "Shooters" for $399.00 (plus shipping - total= $424.00). I had the exact same ejector problems. I posted this somewhere else and referred to the video that I saw about the fix. I also want to thank you so very much for making the video because hearing it described is not near as good as actually seeing it. I think that you did a great job and I, along with countless others, I'm sure, am very grateful. I shot five shots, no problem, then, every other shot was a FTE. Once I got out my needle nose pliers and did "the fix", no more FTE. Again, thank you and I hope that you had a very, merry Christmas! Also, we will all have a Happy New Year with our M&P 15-22's, now that we know the fix!

Glad you got your 15-22 straightened out with the ejector fix.

Don't you qualify for the S&W LEO discount?

Thanks for the vid. I just fixed mine a few minutes ago. Fired off a complete mag w/o a hitch. I will get to do some more testing in the near future. I wish they would send me some free mags even though I fixed it myself.
I noticed in the vid that he didn't say something that I noticed. He said to move it inward maybe 1/16". What I did was to not remove the bolt. I just slid it back far enough to clear the ejector and bent it a little at the time and kept sliding the bolt forward to check my clearance. I left just enough room to slide an index card in between the bolt and the ejector. I couldn't believe it when I rapid fired 25 rounds into the dirt.

FTF ar15-22

bad luck on the gun I suppose. I took mine out today and used anew box of blazer 525 count and not one fte or ftf. I was impressed. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

i just brought mine to the range today and shot about 150 rounds of winchester xpert hv. i had only 1 FTF, i'm assuming it's the round since there was a good size dent in the rim. however i got a couple of double fires. it was only the first 2 rounds of the mag. has anyone else had this problem. i'm guessing it's the way i loaded the mag. i took care when loading, making sure the nose of the round was up and gave soft tap on side of the mag before loading the rifle.

I bought mine Monday and fired it yesterday, before reading anything here. Out of 150 rounds, I had zero FTE but two FTF.

I'll check the ejector clearance right now (just to make sure it's correct) and will make sure the mag is loaded correctly everytime.

And thanks for the good video!

I field stripped mine last night and the ejector is perfect, from the factory. Bought Monday at the second store I called.

Two rounds in the magazine were not staggered so I pulled them all out and reloaded it with 23 rounds, and made sure they are all staggered correctly.

I also noticed that it was dirty in there and there were some tiny metal filings inside that gave some of the sliding parts a slightly "gritty" feel. It may just be from the 100 or so rounds I have put through it (and I don't have enough experience to say what it is for sure) but I highly recommend a good cleaning/lube before putting a single round down range with a new 15-22.

Mine gets a good service tomorrow.

Hello all - newbie here - have been reading the posts about M&P15-22 ejector problems, etc. I have the same type of issue- thought it was ammo at first- weapon did not like stingers at all - went to 36gr cci mini mags- shot well at first then jamming again, even tried different mags (I bought extra factory mags)- guys at the shop/range where I purchased gave it a go - jammed on them too- Had sent in to Smith and they turned it around in record time - Smith's letter indicated they had "brought the rifle up to current factory specs" with no elaboration- I went back to the range and within 50 rounds - it was as if nothing had ever been done to the weapon- the jams were just as frequent as before and with different mags. I applaud Smith's responsiveness and turnaround time but beginning to suspect this particular weapon is not a keeper.-

Ejector problems are correctable. There's no telling what S&W did or did not do since they never indicate so... In any event, there's a video here showing exactly how to align the ejector.

I had a few FTE problems. I moved the ejector over a hair about 1500 rounds ago. No problems since. I now have over 2000 rounds through it (I’m no longer counting, just hurry up and reload the mags!).

Mine hates CCI. Everything else I have loves CCI but my 15-22for whatever reason simply will not run them. Federal Bulk, Federal Auto Match, Federal Lightning, Federal Champion all cycle with very few problems (less than 10 in the last 1500 rounds).

I have been on this and other forums for a while, and yours is the first I have read that has not been running better after getting it back from S&W.

Some questions. What ammo are you using? Are you loading the magazines per S&W directions? I guess it is possible jamming could have moved your ejector the wrong direction.
Is your extractor still in the bolt?

keep barrel tight

Mine worked great until it started to loose accuracy sent the scope back for an exchange, got a new scope no better, found the barrel nut was loose

Well I sure hope that is not the case for my rifle! It is being picked up by Fedex in the morning to get the Extractor fix. Mine doesn't jam, I just don't have an Extractor anymore. Really wish we knew what Smith was doing to fix these problems..

I had double fires as well. I sent it back to smith and they fixed it. I haven't had a problem since.

:confused:The gun is great but I have a problem. I don't know a whole lot about guns. I pushed the pin to split it in half and the bolt and charging handle fell out. I put them back in and closed it up with the pin. After that, I pulled the charging handle back and it fell out. I know how to fix it but it will not split open when I pull the pin out. I just want to know what is wrong so I can get out to the range.:confused:

new 15-22

just shot my new 15-22 yesterday. Used Winchester (copper plated I think) ammo. Had 2 FTF in the first 25 rounds and that was it. The next bizzillion rounds fired without issue.

For all those that are having issues I suggest you call S&W, send the rifle back for service and make the request for the actual person who services the firearm to give you a call so you can find out what they did and let them know you want to make sure the problem you had is fully understood by the technition.

S&W is a great company and supports the products they sell. Not sure if they'll do it but it will let them know you expect the job to be done right the first time (I've done this with other products and had preety good response).
