Hello everyone. My name is Clint and I just picked up a M&P Shield today, most likely to replace my Kahr PM9 as my EDC. Just having a chance to check it out, I like how it feels and I really like this trigger. I can't wait to get it to the range. Being a Kahr owner you have to go through a whole prep process before you shoot it. Would you clean it and oil it before taking it to the range for the first time? Also, are there any other things you would do?

Next week I should be picking up my next S&W as well, a M29. I really can't wait for that too!

Welcome. Shouldn't have to do anything special with the Shield. Just read the manual and do what it says. A quick cleaning and proper lube is always a good idea with any new gun, no matter who made it.

Now your Model 29 is another matter. I suggest you start reading and asking questions if you are not familiar with using revolvers - particularly magnum revolvers. They are not all that delicate, but they are finely made machines and they do require proper handling and some routine care. Learn a little about it and enjoy it. :)

Welcome Clint. The shield is very oiled down, out of the box. I cleaned, oiled, and wiped mine before firing. It isn't packed in cosmoline, but it will familiarlize you with the Shield. I rented a CM9 for comparison before I bought my Shield, and the difference for me was night and day. You will like the lighter operation of the slide and the trigger feel. I carry every day, safety off, IWB.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

I figured as much. I was really thrown off when I had to do all that prep with my PM9. Tomorrow I'm going to break it down and clean & oil it.

I have never fired a revolver. I'm going to head over to the revolver sub-forum and do some reading up then. I know it's important to keep your fingers clear of the cylinder when firing, but I didn't know there was anything else I needed to know. Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah, it really is. I know what you mean too. The slide on my PM9 is the stiffest I've ever had. I do like how much nicer the slide is and so far I prefer the trigger to the PM9. My main reason for replacing it is the fact the PM9 hasn't been reliable. I haven't been able to carry it because I don't trust it. It's been having some pretty bad FTF issues and sometimes the slide doesn't lock back on the last round. I just got it back from Kahr, but I'm tired of dealing with it. I've not heard of a single person having issues with these.

Welcome from Texas Polygon. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Thanks, and will do! :)

I just picked up my second S&W yesterday. :D
