I just got a 686. Can anyone tell me about this? It has some numbers, etc.. on frame under grips. Also, it has some scratches. Any suggestions on how to polish them out? serial AJN3860.

Nice score...

Many here feel that the Model 686 is the penultimate do anything, go anywhere .357 handgun.

Those are assembly numbers which follow the frame through the production process....

Why would you want to polish these out as they're completely hidden by the grips/stocks?

I believe he wants to polish out the scratches he mentioned, not the numbers.

Flitz or Mother's mag polish will do well to help clean up your gun. If you prefer the brushed look, use some grey scotch brite pads, gently. That will also help blend in the scratches.

Nice find on a great gun !

SCRATCHES, WHAT SCRATCHES?

Not the first, or last if you intend to use it. Kinda looks like someone already used too much elbow grease on the S&W logo, from those pics.

I'm not sure I feel the 686 is the next to last of all the S&Ws out there in revolver land. I would rate it near the top.
