I picked this one up over the weekend. It's in pretty good shape. One scratch on it over the writing on the right side of the frame and a dent on the left grip. I guess someone dropped it. Thats to bad, other than that its great. No blue wear and a very light turn line.

No box so I put it in a new rug.

K 128xxx puts it about '51.

Nice, these are going higher and higher price wise too. My love for the K22 has turned into love for the K38's too. Thats just a warning....

I love the K22 and Model 17 S&W revolvers and you got a really nice one. Heck I even like the 617 eraly versions.

Lovely. Just got my first, but I'll grab another if I see a good deal at the Chantilly show later this month. So many variants, you gotta have more than one!

Very nice taper barrel !
I picked one up Sunday as well with a slightly higher serial near K139,xxx and same early post war tall shoulder profile Magnas.

Does your gun also have the plastic grip medallions instead of nickeled brass sometimes found in Magnas from this era ?

I have two K22's from the early 50's with the plastic medallion,

Don't keep it in the rug. Traps moisture and promotes corrosion.

Don't ask how I know this...

I bought what I thought was a near 100% K38 from a friend.
At his house in that light it looked perfect.

Later upon closer inspection there was light rust over the entire gun.
I hated it, even for a shooter, and sold it with full disclosure.

My friend also sold me a post war .38 Outdoorsman in the package deal for $1000 total for both guns. The Outdoorsman was 99-98%. I came out ahead and never told my buddy about the rust on the K38 that he stored in a gun rug.

I hear you and Saxon. I only use the rugs for transport.

What do you guys recommend for storage? I usually keep my stuff with a good coat of oil and constantly rub them down. I shoot my guns and keep them clean. Living in Fla. it's what you have to do. I'd love to find another way to store them for the long term. I will one day have some nice things from my Dad. He's old Fla.school too and never has a problem with rust.

That's a good question. How can I tell?

When compared in the light to a nickeled brass pair the plastic ones appear dark grey in appearence.

I had heard S&W tried this for a short period due to metal shortages but switched back.
Also heard that if you use the wrong chemical on them they dissolve.

Its juts another little S&W tidbit that makes them so interesting to collect.

Thanks E-49. I think they are plastic. They kinda look dull grey like pewter not bright like nickel.

I learn something here everyday.

Happy happy happy..
