Greetings. I have a first year production K-22 Outdoorsman, I'm in the process of disassembling for a thorough cleaning. What is the best method to unscrew and remove the ejector rod? The knurled end of the rod on this early model does not fit through the hole in the yoke so need to remove it. It's beyond hand tight and I don't want to mar the rod or bend anything. Am I correct that the threads are reversed on a 1931 production revolver? Is there a way to remove the rod without any special tool?

1959-1960: Extractor rod thread direction changed to left hand thread on the K and N frames. These are identified by their dash #. As always with Smith, beware of those models with the dash # for LH thread, but that still have the RH thread and vice

From "Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson"

I have a special device for removing them. It's an aluminum device that locks down on the outer rod via two alan head screws and does not mar the component yet provides for a good hand grip to overcome a too tight rod. I've had it for years and I think that I bought it from Brownells. Check their catalog/web site.

I'm traveling right now so I'm unable to provide a photo.

When removing a recalcitrant ejector rod, put fired cases in the charge holes to keep from harming the cylinder assembly from the torque that you apply.

I have used a wooden clothes pin and Visegrips.
Empty cases in the cylinder, clothes pin on rod, clamp the Visegrips on the clothes pin, and turn the proper direction. If really stuck a little penetrating oil will help.
Has never marked a ejector rod for me, works every time.

The knob does not come off the rod. By the Model 1905, 3rd Change they were one solid piece. The rod on your revolver is a standard right handed thread and will turn out as noted by others above. The use of a good vice is a plus with the clothes pin of drilled block of wood locked in the vice will almost certainly separate the two piece rod by simply using your hand to turn the cylinder with empty cases in the chambers.
