K-22 Outdoorsman Thread - It's been a While

Two of my favorites:

I've posted this one before. Custom hammer and trigger. Very well done, not by King. I have never seen stocks with brass bushings around the locating stud.

Second is the lowest serial numbered Outdoorsman made. Either that, or the factory forgot to stamp the first digit on the butt.

Thanks for sharing Richard! While these are outside of my current collecting range, I always enjoy seeing beautiful S&W's.

Any chance you might be able to post a few more photos of the KB Kearsarge stocks up close? I am a huge fan and they look simply extraordinary!

Best regards, Bob.

The serial #s on mine are K 29142. Does this date it to about 1948?

Yes, your serial number would be from 1948. However, your gun is a K-22 Masterpiece, not a K-22 Outdoorsman. The K-22 Outdoorsman was only made prior to WW II, did not have a rib on the barrel, and the serial numbers were numbers only (no K prefix). There are other differences also, but these are the most visible ones.

I love mine. It is a 1939 gun and my mother, who is long gone, had a 1939 Colt, which has two pair of stocks....the wood and the ivory. Mine has the original stocks along with a pair of Keith Brown Ropers....

Thanks for the above. I was unaware of the distinction and as you state mine does have the rib. It also has larger grips. However I don't know whether my grips are original on not

Well, how's about one more for the day.

Here is an interesting specimen.

I believe the owner of this gun was an avid shooter.

It appears as though the front sight has been replaced. No silver or gold. Plain black.

The action has been modified.

Single action is fine.

Trigger cocking action has been modified to not cock the hammer while pulling the trigger through. Unusual. I had the side plate off of it, briefly, a while back and didn't see where the mod was addressed. And, I do mean briefly.

Also, the right stock panel has been very well done for shooting purposes. The checking on the grip panel looks good and feels good.

It is a nice specimen, overall.

Any blemishes appear pronounced in the areas that your hands would contact the gun.

And it shipped in February, 1931. Early gun.

Enjoy,

bdGreen

All:

Thanks so much for helping me scratch my K-22 O/D itch. There are some beautiful guns shared. A few comments on some of the great posts:

Terry:

The forum is very lucky when you share your photo montages...

Here is my only one. To me, it has a couple of things going for it......King upgrade and a very, very early serial number (632157) that shipped in January 1931.

Larry:

I have always loved your KST Outsoorsman - the ultimate upgrade.

Here are my two Outdoorsman. Note the Humpback hammer and large medalion grips on #655509. The other, #636020 is just a darn nice early example.

Richard:

Those two beauties deserve a larger image...

Thanks to all for sharing,

I've been thinking about buying a 617 to shoot up a bunch of ammo I've accumulated. You guys have officially given me a different game plan. Congratulations. I knew the right thing to do all along. I was being irresponsible with my savings thinking about buying a new gun. What the heck was I thinking, and why didn't I buy one of these earlier?

Richard,
Do the large medallion grips number to the gun? Thanks.
Larry

Larry:

I haven't seen Hibbs (Richard) post a response yet, but all of the large medallion K-Frame "service" stocks that I have seen have been in the 610XXX-612XXX range if I recall correctly. Probably too early for a K-22 Outdoorsman. Before, I received the KB service stocks for the Quigley engraved pinto O/D, this is the set of large medallion stocks that I had on it.

The stocks are numbered 611670.
