I just acquired this K-22 from my local gun shop yesterday - cost was just under $700 out the door. Attached pictures are the best I can do with the camera we have.. All opinions appreciated...

Seems to be in very nice shape. LOVE the target stocks. Is it the picture, or was it really grungy inside (hammer)? I love these. Congratulations.

Nice looking revolver, I have one from 1948. You did well on price. How about giving us a serial number and we'll date it for you.

Thanks to all for the replies. SN is K289253, looked it up in SCSW and says it should be 1957 just prior to stamping M17. It must be the picture, the gun was really clean inside and the hammer and trigger are case color with real good colors left. The grips are not numbered so I suppose they were changed out by a previous owner. Would love to have the original grips numbered to the gun. I am thinking about getting a S&W letter for my files on this one.

Nice find! Any time you get an older K-target of any caliber, you know you have a high likelihood of getting a very nice revolver. I would not be surprised if the letter comes in showing it original with the "3 Ts." That's sort of the ultimate development for the breed! :D

My K-22 and K-38 are nearly a decade older than this one and are among my favorites to shoot and among the last I would consider getting rid of. I hope you'll enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Senior, I hope they gave you the rest of the internals for your K-22 :).

Enjoy!

LOL.... yep it was all there. The rest of the internal parts were soaking in Hoppe's to get any gunk cleaned out. Not that there wasn't very much, just some old hardened grease. Typical for the age. I don't think it had every been disassembled since leaving the factory.

Chief, I do believe that a lot of people who own S&W revolvers don't have any idea how to disassemble and clean the lock works, let along reassemble it. They clean what they can see and that's about it. I know you'll enjoy it, I enjoy shooting all my K-frames.

I think that is true of all the older guns regardless of type. I collect mostly pre WWI to Post WWII, unless I come across one like this one, and most every single one had to be stripped to parade rest to get it truely clean of all the hardened grease and grime. I've have built a "how to" resource file on every single pistol I own. Some the information was available in books I have bought, others were close enough to other makes/models that I winged it and took pictures as I went along and wrote down the procedures. Very time consuming, but if I ever sell one, it'll come with the file I created for it. No need to someone else to reinvent the wheel......

Not really "just prior." Non-model-marked K-22 Masterpiece revolvers were well into the K300,000 range before they got the Model 17 designation marked on them. Quite a few non-model-marked examples shipped in 1958. Model marking did not start instantly when management decided to use model numbers.

For comparison
My highest five screw is K-22 Serial K 259018 Shipped June 1956.
(Four screw Combat Magnums begin to ship in early 1956 with initial serial run from K-260001 to K-265000)

My highest four screw K-22 is Serial K309056 Shipped Nov 1957
My highest pre model K frame is Combat Magnum Serial K 317946 Shipped May 1958,
Then jumps to a Model marked 18 Serial K 334388 Shipped Nov 1958

Like the additional comments about the pre 17 and when marked in SN range. I have a letter comming from S&W and will know more when it arrives and to where it was sent hopefully. Will post when I get it.
