I have a chance to buy this 1948 K22 with target hammer and trigger. The seller rates the gun 80-85% with good mechanical function. Ask is $900 CAD plus shipping (about $640 US) For comparison a nice Model 17-2 or 17-3 can be bought here in the 650-700 CAD range.

Does being a pre 17 5 screw add that 35-40% in value?

Thoughts?

Well it would in my book. When I was collecting K 22's pre 1950's was ALWAYS in the front running. :) JMHO :)

As a added note, target hammers also ALWAYS got my attention. While I sold my collection a few years back I think I still have a target hammer or two on the parts rack. :)

$640 would be close to the standard ask around here. Personally, I would look for one in a little better condition and pay a little more accordingly. FYI, the hammer and trigger are standard for a K Masterpiece of that vintage. The hammer is commonly known as a "fish hook" hammer and the trigger is not a target. There is also a big chunk out of the right stock at the top of the forestrap. That would be the side that has the matching serial number stamped inside if the stocks match the gun. I could be repaired though.

The hammer and trigger are what they should be for that vintage. They are not the true target style of later guns.I don't think that 1948 guns were offered with a target hammer-that came a wee bit later.

Buy it. Definitely worth the price. . .and more in my opinion. I paid $600 for this 1948 last month (with no box) and see comparable ones offered for more. Good luck.

85%?

I'm with jsfricks, based on those pics the k22 appears to be in a lot better condition than 85%. If the box numbers to the gun it would sell for a lot more than $640 in my neck of the woods.

Nice looking revolver.
I was lucky enough to pick up a '52 vintage k22 this week.
I've wanted one since my teens when a neighbors older brother had one and actually let me fire it once.
I would say mine is 85% or better with no box and I paid a little bit less but grips were replaced at some point .
Yours is a bit nicer.
I fired mine for the first time this afternoon and beer cans or bunnies don't have a chance at 25 yards. This is going to make a great little trail/target gun.
I'm very happy and I'm sure you will be too.

So i pointed out the issue with the right grip and the deller came back to be at $800. he also encouraged me to make an offer.

At the same time I've been offered a 90% 17-2 with combat trigger and hammer for 725 and a 95%+ 17-3 with target trigger and hammer for $800.from another seller. I suspect I could get this seller down $50 or so on either of those guns

Which would you go for?

17-2 and 17-3

I think the finish on the first K22 with box is much better than you stated. At $800 CAD with box I would buy that one. Offer $750 and you get a great deal! The chip can be fixed by a couple of our grip guys here on the forum.

Woof. That's a tough choice! I'd say if everything we can't see in the pics is A+ (rear of cylinder is perfect, bore is perfect, etc) I'd lean toward the K-22. But a clean 17-2 for 2/3rd the price is a darn good deal!

Keep in mind I'm a shooter 1st and a collector 2nd, so things like box, tools, paperwork etc are lower on my list than some of the guys on here. I like unique, useful guns in calibers I can shoot often and for a reasonable price. A postwar K-22 is a bit more unique than a 17 but not by much.

I'm inclined to agree with Arjay and Cooter Brown. It does appear to right side "high" and left side "low" shoulder diamond magnas. This wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but would certainly be a point of negotiation. I'd guess you'd have to put anywhere from $35 to $50 US to get a single high shoulder in decent condition.

I bought a Md 18 with mismatched grips. I put a WTB ad here on the forum for a K high shoulder and was offered one by a member for $40. Now I'm happy!

So are are "high" and "low" shouldered diamond magnas from different eras or different models? Which would be correct for this gun (1948 K-22)
