K-32 What do I have

Sure Jim, believe it or not it was the Firing Line. I had only gone over to get the feel of a Ruger GP100, not to buy anything. I didn't even have any $$$ on me. It was sitting next to the Ruger in the case. Any chance you shoot at the Cherry Creek Gun Club on S. Clinton?

Here's why I wouldn't shoot it until I got a letter. Well, I mean I wouldn't shoot it again. :) A member here, Michael Stern, had an 8 shot, 4" blue 27, 1 of 100 manufactured and was shooting it with Fiocchi factory ammo. Apparently one round was double charged and it blew the cylinder to pieces. Michael called the factory and they could only provide him a stainless cylinder for it. He had a blue / stainless pinto, sort of. I bought it from him as a shooter. Mistakes can happen and if you are just dying to shoot 32 long, you could buy one of the 32 mags and shoot it. If it letters as a 6", then yes I'd shoot the bejesus out of it!

Stu- I am a member of the Golden Gun Club, live near Smokey Hill and Buckley. I think you got a good deal on that gun even if it letters as 6" gun, my debit card would have shot out of my wallet for that one. Smith K-32s are as nice shooting guns any gun I have fired. I have a shooter 1970's K-32 and love it.

lowriderfxr. Good point, I'll take it under advisement. I have 4 other .32 Long's so no problem on something to shoot. BUT I am starting to load up some 98 gr. WC's for it. Seems to love them.

glenncal1 and stu1ritter, I may be from IL, but I visit a couple times a year with my daughter's family in Centennial, in the Knolls off Smokey Hill and Berry, and I always go to the Firing Line. Took both granddaughters there for a shooting lesson at Christmas time. Is there another range in that general vicinity other than the Firing Line and the Aurora Gun Club? I have shot in the state park at the Cherry Hills Reservoir, it was O.K. but busy. There is a new indoor range (pretty plush) a little further south, their new larger range was just going to open the next week after I was there it looked impressive, I think they said it would have 25 lanes.

H Richard. Indeed. There is a private gun club called the Cherry Creek Gun Club (www.cherrycreekgunclub.org) at 1310 S. Clinton St., between Florida and Mississippi, and between Havana and Leetsdale/Parker Rd. I have been a member since the late 80's. We have 20 points to 25 yards indoors with electric turning targets and excellent ventilation. There is also an underground 100 yard rifle tube (8 foot culvert sections buried underground. I'll PM all of my contact info and if you are out this way it would be my pleasure to take you to the club as a guest, for a session or two.

I'll be in touch. My son-in-law also likes to shoot when he has time. The underground tube sounds unique. I was in a range out there over in the Western section suburbs that had an underground 100 yard range. Heck of a big concrete culvert, I think there were 6 shooting positions. They said that range had been there since the 30's. They wouldn't allow any lead bullet ammo shot there, only jacketed, I assume for ventilation reasons.

Our tube is limited to two shooters at a time. There are benches at both positions. Just before hunting season it gets pretty noisy down there. We have a stout door on the tube. We allow lead as the tube is extremely well ventilated. It was laid in during the late 1970's.

Great find, I'm also in Denver. The firing line is on my list of shops to visit when I'm lurking, but they generally dont have much, are jerks, and prices are sky high! Glad to know that once in a while a good deal that comes out of there.... Nice job! :)

Buy yourself a LOTTO ticket ASAP...You may be on a roll.

Wow! What a find.

Congratulations.

Took it to the range today. What did he say "Pry it out of my dead cold hands"?

Not bad for a short-barreled gun. Looks like you won no matter what the letter says.

Hard to describe the buzz when I saw it in the showcase and when the sales guy handed it to me and I squeaked out, I"ll take it. Yeah, I do think I won big time. Everyone, thanks for your kind words.

I think it would be safe to say you got more than a few hearts beating faster. And for $600 it makes your purchase just that much sweeter. Good catch. Frank

Hello Stu
I have always had a soft spot for the .32 S&W Long cartridge. I find it to be super accurate and fun to shoot. That said I hunted hard to get a later Made Model 16 dash Two or Three revolver but to no avail. Many year's later I struck up a conversation about re-loading for the .32 S&W Long Cartrige and a Guy PM's me saying that he had an Older S&W K-32 revolver. I pounced on him ready to buy it, but was denied. I kept Track of him and kept offering him Trades for it, but I was turned down time and time again. I then came acorss a S&W Model 34 blued snub nosed revolver and one of the low production Dayton Outdoor Sport's revolver's and we struck up a Trade. Up to just before he shipped me the gun I had not asked much about it he told me that it was Nice and not shot very much. The Night before we shipped the gun's to each other he sent me a picture of his K-32. It was Not only a K-32 But it was a Five screw Pre-16 I was very excited. I got it and it was everything that he said that it was. I do shoot it from time to time it is Very accurate and one of my Prized S&W's. Here it is it shipped in April of 1951. Regards, Hammerdown

Ahhh, Hammedown, what a gem. Stark raving gorgeous. And the vapor paper isn't even crumpled :~) I think I know the feelings involved when you opened the box. With my purchase, the store owner said, the grips don't number, I said I don't care. He then said, you know it's a cut down barrel, once again, I didn't care. It was a K-32, that was all that mattered. I also have great affinity for the cartridge. I first started shooting it in 1990 or 91 with a Hammerli 280 for centerfire in Bullseye. I have been a fan ever since and have been accumulating shootable i & j-frames always on the lookout for a K-32.

Hello STU
I appreciate your kind word's here. In the Hunt for a K-32 I did find a K-32 Magnum as I call it being my Model 16-4. It came to me new in box and I paid $600.00 for it about Ten years ago. A few year's ago I decided to take the Plunge and have it's caliber converted from the anemic .32 H&R Magnum to the new then Hot Federal .327 Magnum. Less than a week after I got it back I bagged a 51 pound Bob Cat with it while deer hunting using one of my own hand loads that clocked 1630 F.P.S. on my Chrony. I had this cat mounted in the Pounce position I shot it @ 35 Yards with my K-32 Magnum. It is currently a State record here in Tennessee for weight as well as size he measure's 41-1/2" In length and only the second one recorded that has been shot with a hand gun in the state of Tennessee the last one shot with a hand gun here was back in the mid 1940's time span. Regards, Hammerdown
